Wigan Athletic 2-1 Northampton Town

Wigan Athletic moved up to minus two points in League One after clinching their second league win of the season at DW Stadium against Northampton Town.

Northampton started well and even hit the post a minute later through William Hondermarck. It was no more than they deserved, then, as Sam Hoskins fired a wonderful free-kick over the wall and into the top corner of the Wigan net in the 24th minute.

Wigan made a substitution early in the second half and Callum McManaman came on within 10 minutes of the restart.

The new man fired a Callum Lang cross just wide of the target before being nullified by Marc Leonard and handed a yellow card.

Cobblers boss Jon Brady was also given a yellow card after the incident, followed shortly thereafter by assistant Colin Calderwood.

Wigan’s equalizer came 18 minutes from time when Charlie Hughes headed in from a Tom Pearce corner.

And McManaman secured a deserved win with 11 minutes remaining when he flicked a beautiful shot into the top corner from 20 yards out.

Latics forward Charlie Wyke had time to head the post from a yard away.
