Manchester United: Fans protest Glazer ownership at Old Trafford
A Manchester United supporters group has accused the Glazer family of holding the club “hostage” over its long ownership saga.
There was no clarity on the bids from Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s Ineos Group.
The Glazers bought United for £790m ($1.34bn) in 2005.
Sheikh Jassim and Ratcliffe are waiting to find out if they have been successful, and the organizations that have offered minority funding have also not been informed.
During the review period – which could potentially lead to a sale of the club – members of the Glazer family have featured in three Wembley finals involving United.
Co-chairman Avie Glazer and his wife were also present at a training session and game in New Jersey during the club’s summer tour of the United States.
An observer with knowledge of United and a long career in football finance told ` Sport they had never seen anything like it “in 40 years in the business”.
The 1958 group, which has spearheaded recent protests against the Glazer family and spelled out their demands on last month’s ` podcast How To Buy A Football Club, had previously urged fans to stand next to the Trinity statue Gather Old Trafford Monday’s Premier League game against Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The move was encouraged by the independent Manchester United Supporters’ Association, which had a direct dialogue with the Glazer family as they interacted with fans following the collapse of the European Super League.
A spokesman for the Manchester United Supporters Trust said: “As time goes on this feels less like a sales process and more like the Glazer family are holding Manchester United and its fans hostage.”
“The common message from the fans is clear: sell the club. And if you don’t intend to, at least have the courage to say so and explain what the farce of the last nine months has been about.”
“On the pitch there is clear progress at United and the entire fan base stands behind Erik and the team.”
“But that aside dissatisfaction with the ownership and sales process has not gone away and will only escalate as the new season begins.”
