Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson are back in Malaga, Spain on Sunday for the second of consecutive warm-up games, this time against the home side, FiBA’s top-ranked team.
Team USA won their first two FIBA World Cup warm-up games against Puerto Rico and Slovenia (without Luka Doncic) by averaging 36.5 points, but Sunday’s game, the second of a rare international clash against Spain, should be more of a one be test. The Americans and Spaniards are FIBA’s top two ranked teams by day and the game will be held in Malaga, Spain. To make things even more meaningful for Spain, it is part of the celebrations of the 100th anniversary of the Spanish Basketball Federation, FEB.
Spain are targeting a roster of NBA and European stars including Alex Abrines, Willy and Juancho Hernangomez, Santi Aldama, Rudy Fernandez, Sergio Llull and Usman Garuba but not Ricky Rubio, their longtime star and point guard. Rubio announced earlier this month that he is taking time off from his basketball commitments to take care of his mental health. This is a great loss.
Sunday’s game will be broadcast on FOX Sports.
As for the “twins,” Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson each average 11.5 points per game for Team USA and play about 20 minutes per game in their two stunning victories. Bridges has started both games with Johnson coming on as a substitute. After Sunday’s game, Team USA will fly to Abu Dhabi (UAE) for the last pre-season games against Greece and Germany next Friday and Sunday.
