Nigerian dancer and choreographer Kaffy Shafau, award-winning TikToker Rodney Umeh and Meta West Africa communications manager Sola Obagbemi joined media practitioner and author Tosin Ajibade-Oladeinde to educate Nigerian students on the safe use of social media.
The New Media Conference School Debate, held at Chalcedony School in Ibeju Lekki, Lagos, had the theme “Does Social Media Enrich?” and began with a pre-lecture debate among the students.
In their arguments, the students between the ages of nine and eleven emphasized the importance of social media and named ways of curbing their excessive use. Some of the topics discussed during the debate are: cyberbullying, adult content, the spread of fake news, plagiarism and social media controls.
Speaking at the event, Kaffy advised students to ensure they use social media platforms positively. She added: “Social media is a tool and you are the driver. There will always be good and bad, but who is behind the keyboard is what matters.”
Sola Obagbemi urged children to be good ambassadors regardless of the social media they use. She said children should learn to take advantage of social media for their education and personal development.
The organizer, Oluwatosin Ajibade-Oladeinde, commended the host school, the panelists and the students for their contribution to the success of the program and assured the participants that she will continue to do her best to raise awareness and educate children about the wise use of new media.
The first and second place winners were awarded. Each student participant received a copy of the book “Olori Supergal from Social Misfit to Social Media Hero” written by Tosin Ajibade and “Alajota” by Kafayat ‘Kaffy’ Shafau.
