Parents of the local trampoline Olympic have high hopes that their daughter will win the first US medal for sports – NBC 7 San Diego
In less than a week, 23-year-old Nicole Ahsinger will compete in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.
The 1.50 m long trampoline gymnast took third place at the World Cup in Brescia in Italy in June.
Her parents Steve Ahsinger and Michelle Taylor live on the Scripps Ranch.
“Physically not there, but mentally we’re in Tokyo right now,” said Taylor. “She is FaceTime to us and speaks to us every day so that we can be part of the experience and of course fall back on Rio so that we somehow, you know, live through it on behalf of us.”
“Over the moon, over the top. I’m so looking forward to her, ”said Steve Ahsinger. “I’m glad she does it again.”
Nicole Ahsinger finished 15th at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio and was the only US representative in this sport. She was also the youngest in the field at 18.
“What could go well for you: everything. If this routine is the way she trained it, this girl is going to be on the podium and then I get really emotional, “said Michelle Taylor.
Nicole Ahsinger doesn’t have a name yet, but she is about to make history. The United States, while a powerhouse at gymnastics, has never received an athlete medal on the trampoline.
Nicole Ahsinger and her family hope that she will reach new heights in Tokyo. They say her sport is very difficult and she has to be precise to win a medal.
“The thing is, if you stop during the routine, it’s over. You cannot get back in and lock up. So I always said to her very, very young; You can’t win if you don’t finish, ”said Michelle Taylor. “She has a very good hit rate that many others don’t. So I’m nervous because a little, tiny skinny might end it. “
Her parents are a little disappointed that they cannot physically be in Tokyo and support Nicole like they did in Rio, but they said they understand the safety precautions.
“They’re tested every day and if it’s positive it’s over, it’s out. I’m nervous about it, but she’s vaccinated, wearing the mask and keeping her distance very carefully, ”said Michelle Taylor.
Ashinger will compete on the trampoline on Thursday, July 29th, at 9 p.m. Your parents will be watching from home with family and friends.
