Zebedee Introduces Global Payments Service Powered by Bitcoin’s Lightning Network

Bitcoin gaming and payments company Zebedee has launched a payment feature in its app that allows users to instantly send any amount of money in five jurisdictions, including the Philippines and Brazil, for little or nothing using Bitcoin’s Lightning Network.

The feature allows users to connect their Zebedee accounts directly to platforms powered by Bitcoin (BTC) payment companies, including Philippines-based Pouch and Brazil-based Bipa, according to a press release. Bitcoin’s Lightning Network is a Layer 2 scaling system that enables cheaper and faster Bitcoin payments.

The new functionality could increase competition in the global remittance market. Last year, digital payments company Strike launched its own Lightning-based remittance service – Send Globally – which operates primarily in the Philippines, Nigeria, Kenya and Ghana.

A key aspect of Zebedee’s new feature is to protect users from the complexities of sending and receiving Lightning payments. According to the press release, the solution requires “no previous knowledge of cryptocurrency or blockchain”.

“A user in Brazil can earn bitcoin by playing a game like solitaire, then immediately transfer that money to Bipa and exchange it for Brazilian reais,” the press release reads. “A user in the US can lend money to a friend in the Philippines for a cup of coffee. They can easily transfer money to their friend on the other side of the world, who can then immediately spend that money in Philippine pesos via Pouch.”
