ROSEMONT, ill. — The Big Ten Conference bureau released its winter 2022 Academic All-Big Ten team on Wednesday (March 23), with a record 116 University of Michigan student-athletes receiving the honor. Michigan previously had 113 winter student-athletes who earned the honor over the past year.
Criteria for being named to the Academic All-Big Ten team include being in at least their second academic year at their institution and maintaining a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or higher.
The breakdown of Michigan student-athletes on the list is five from men’s basketball, 10 from women’s basketball, 17 from men’s gymnastics, 10 from women’s gymnastics, 16 from ice hockey, 21 from men’s swimming and diving, 21 from women -swimming and diving and 16 from wrestling.
The conference bureau also presents the Academic All-Big Ten honors during the fall and spring seasons. UM had 171 honorees this fall, giving the Wolverines 287 so far for 2021-22.
Student-athletes with a GPA of 3.7 or higher for the current academic year, excluding summer school, are eligible for the Distinguished Scholar Award announced during the summer.
