The 2023 Hundred edition got off to a sensational start as the Southern Brave women and Trent Rockets men claimed victories in their opening games at Trent Bridge in Nottingham. However, the sporting tension was overshadowed by an unfortunate incident during a mid-game interview.
Former Love Island contestant Chris Hughes, who held the mic for ` Sport, was criticized for his obnoxious and ignorant remarks during an interview with Southern Brave and Australian all-rounder Maitlan Brown. The interview took place on the sidelines of the 2023 Women’s Hundred opening game between Southern Brave and Trent Rockets.
During the interview, Brown mentioned that the team watched the Barbie movie together as part of their team bond. Hughes sheepishly replied, “You’re a little Barbie yourself, with your blue eyes,” leading to an awkward laugh from the cricketer.
The video of the interview quickly went viral and was met with widespread condemnation from fans, particularly women. Many viewers found the presenter’s comment distasteful and disrespectful, and criticized both Hughes and the broadcaster for allowing such remarks on air.

The match saw the Southern Brave women emerge victorious thanks to a brilliant half-century from Indian star batter Smriti Mandhana. With the ball, Mary Taylor’s three wickets helped keep the Trent Rockets batting side in check, making for a successful start for the women in green.
