“Golf isn’t my thing, dad,” my 7-year-old daughter Olive often tells me. She says it often—nearly every week—when I ask her if she would like to go to our country club in Columbus, Ohio, with her brother and I. But here we are on a muggy July morning at the Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina, where she and my wife Mary are just getting their first official lesson.
The resort is famous for its stunning Ocean Course and has hosted multiple PGA Championships. Had this been a normal outing, we would have broken up by now, and I would have clicked the links while the rest of the family splashed around in the kids’ pool at nearby Night Heron Park, or ordered giant sundaes from the hotel’s private beaches and resort beaches. Cream. But today we are all in the resort’s learning center, located on the Jack Nicklaus-designed Turtle Point golf course.
