He told the story of his grandparents’ enduring relationship, which began when they met at an airfield in France during World War I. “They chose each other…they built purposeful, beautiful lives,” Baker said. “They faced great challenges, but they played their hand out with kindness and optimism – and they played it together.
“This is important,” he continued. “Every hand will bring surprises and disappointments. Yours will too. Who will play this hand with you? It is one of the biggest and most important decisions you will ever make.”
Sharing an excerpt of a letter he wrote to his daughter on her college graduation, he told the graduates, “Don’t be afraid of challenges and disappointments. Growth is often about accepting discomfort and learning from difficult moments.”
Before the ceremony, Baker, a former Harvard University basketball player, met with a small group of Bentley athletic students to discuss their athletic experiences and plans after graduation. According to the NCAA, Bentley student-athletes have achieved the highest graduation rate in the country at 99% for six consecutive years.
