SOUTH East Technological University (SETU) was among six higher education institutions awarded the Accreditation for Student Athlete Support (ASAS) award at Sport Ireland’s HPX 2023 Paris Ready conference at the Tulfarris Hotel and Golf Resort in Wicklow. The first recipient SETU received the affiliate award.
The event is Sport Ireland’s flagship professional development and learning event for high performance professionals that will impact Team Ireland’s performance at the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. The biennial conference aims to bring together CEOs, performance directors, coaches and sports scientists and medical professionals as a community to share knowledge and insights to advance the performance of Irish athletes on the global stage.
Six higher education institutions received the Accreditation for Student Athlete Support (ASAS), recognizing their outstanding achievements in dual career support for their student-athletes. The full 2024-26 ASAS awards were presented by Dr. Úna May and Liam Harbison to Queen’s University Belfast, Setanta College, Technological University Dublin, University College Cork, University of Limerick and SETU.
ASAS is based on providing all high-performing student-athletes equal opportunities to combine sport and education and is based on the right to education. The accreditation sets out clear dual career criteria that universities must meet in order to receive accreditation. The goal of accreditation is to identify and build a network of accredited institutions that support elite athletes to achieve excellence in dual careers through the application of guiding principles.
Accepting the ASAS award, SETU Carlow Vice President of Academic Affairs David Denieffe said: “The SETU team is honored to be recognized by Sport Ireland as a university that supports student-athletes to achieve their dual ambitions in academic and in the sporting field.” Excellence. The ASAS Award recognizes the contributions of our professional and academic staff across all departments across our multi-campus university who strive to provide a student-centered approach that provides flexibility while supporting our student-athletes to perform at the highest level in their sport compete. We look forward to expanding our newly formed partnership with the Sport Ireland Institute in the future and supporting our high performance athletes on their journey through SETU.”
