Cold weather continues to grip the UK with warnings for ice and snow

The Met Office has issued a new yellow weather warning for snow and ice across large parts of the UK.

Forecasters say the latest warning covers much of the Midlands, Yorkshire and north and central Wales, with roads and railways “likely to be affected by the conditions”.

Police in Cumbria have declared a “major incident” after heavy snowfall.

They say people should “only travel where necessary”, particularly to the South Lakes and Millom area.

Police say they have received several reports of vehicles getting stuck in traffic jams due to snow.

Superintendent Andy Wilkinson said: “We are working quickly to clear the roads so those currently affected can travel.”

` weather forecaster Stav Danaos said temperatures could fall as low as -11C in northern Scotland overnight.

“We'll start first thing on Sunday with a wintry mix across the east of England and southeast Scotland, replaced by outbreaks of cloud and slightly less cold weather – although it will still be chilly,” he said.

Mr Danaos added that “wetter and windier weather” was expected to prevail across the UK until Monday.

The forecast follows heavy snow overnight forcing Glasgow Airport to suspend all flights for several hours on Saturday morning.

Glasgow Airport said flights had resumed on Saturday morning, but disruption was still expected and passengers were urged to check with their airline.

A yellow weather warning for ice has been issued for London, the east of England, the West Midlands and parts of south Wales from midnight to 8am on Sunday.

The Met Office added that rain or sleet falling on frozen surfaces could cause people to be injured from slips and falls in icy conditions.

There could be travel disruption and there is a “good chance” some rural communities will be “cut off” and affected by power outages.

Crewe Alexandra's FA Cup game against Bristol Rovers was also called off, while Saturday's high-profile racing game in Newcastle was called off due to snow on the track.

Due to the bad weather, the team flight from Manchester United to Newcastle had to be canceled before the game on Saturday evening, so the team made the journey by bus.

The Met Office's latest yellow weather warning runs until Sunday.

Separately, an amber cold warning from the UK Health Security Agency remains in effect for five regions in England.

Cold weather will likely impact the entire health system and put the entire population at risk, the agency's warning said.

The warning applies to the East Midlands, West Midlands, North West, North East and Yorkshire and Humber until December 5th.
