Netflix is planning another live sporting event – and this time it's a tennis match that pits veteran tennis player Rafael Nadal against Carlos Alcaraz, who is currently ranked No. 2 in the world.
The streamer is calling the event “The Netflix Slam” and it will air on March 3, 2024 from the Michelob Ultra Arena at the Mandalay Bay Resort and Casino in Las Vegas. While it appears that Spanish tennis champions Nadal and Alcaraz will be the main players in the competition, Netflix says it will announce “additional players and matches” at a later date. The stream will be broadcast as a double broadcast for both the English and Spanish speaking markets.
Even as Netflix continues to be involved in the world of live sports, it doesn't look like the streamer will be acquiring broadcast rights to seasonal games any time soon. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos said in July that the company would stick with “sports-related programming,” and rumor has it that Netflix's interest in the NBA's in-season tournament is tied to a possible documentary. If that's true, the lucrative live sports deals will be left to competitors.
(Disclosure: Vox Media Studios produced Full Swing and The Verge recently produced a series with Netflix.)
