The adage that there can be no solid friendships between celebrities has often been negated by the stars themselves. The connection between Raj Kapoor and Dilip Kumar, Rishi Kapoor and Jeetendra, Wahida Rehman, Nanda and Helen was legendary. Recently, too, we have experienced that many colleagues have become confidants and good friends. In celebration of World Friendship Day, here are some examples of famous friendships that have endured through thick and thin.

Dia Mirza and Aditi Rao Hydari
Dia Mirza is known for her enduring friendships, including with childhood friend and producer Ananya Rane and longtime stylist Theia Tekchandaney. However, her wedding was also attended by a well-known industry colleague, Aditi Rao Hydari, with whom Dia has a very close bond. However, very few people know that they have known each other since their school days at Vidyaranya High School in Hyderabad. As with everything else in their lives, the two don’t share much on social media about their long and enduring connection, despite it being one of the strongest friendships in the industry.
Akarsh Khurana and Prajakta Koli
When social media sensation and actress Prajakta Koli was offered her Zee Theatre’s retro comedy Yeh Shaadi Nahi Ho Sakti, based on the stirring themes and music of the ’90s, she immediately said yes, because this was not only an opportunity to relive an era gone by, but to work with director Akarsh Khurana. As she has mentioned in several interviews, Akarsh is someone she has always loved as a friend and mentor. Akarsh is not only a prolific theater artist, but also someone who is very generous to young talent. As Prajakta says, he is someone she turns to when she needs a face-to-face conversation, some guidance and encouragement. She also enjoys being on set with him because he has a “mean” sense of humor, is a great foodie, and is a joker, even though he expects great performances from his actors.
Naseeruddin Shah and Gulzar
This is a friendship that started unusually. When Naseeruddin Shah was an FTII student, he learned that Gulzar was making a film about Mirza Ghalib with one of his favorite actors, Sanjeev Kumar. Shah, who had always loved the poet, felt the casting was a huge mistake and wrote a letter to Gulzar sharing his thoughts. Much later, in 1988, through a twist of fate, Gulzar decided to film a TV series about Ghalib for Doordarshan and cast Shah in it. Though funds were tight, the two created a historic show with unforgettable music by Jagjit Singh. Just a year earlier, Gulzar had also directed Shah in Ijaazat, a tender film about complicated relationships. To this day, the two are good friends and often play badminton together. Gulzar’s song “Dil Toh Baccha Hai ji” from the 2010 film “Ishqiya” was also mapped to Shah and in a way encapsulates their everlasting friendship with each other.
Seema Pahwa and Vinay Pathak
Be it the hilarious comedy Khajoor Mein Atke, the slice-of-life film Chintu Ka Birthday or Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi, or the Zee Theatre’s literary anthology Koi Baat Chale, the lightness between Seema Pahwa and Vinay Pathak as co-artists and friends always manifest. Seema directed Vinay in both “Ramprasad Ki Tehrvi” and “Koi Baat Chale” and shares a mutually enriching relationship with him. They both share a love of classical literature and theater and these two passions brought them together in ‘Koi Baat Chale’ where Vinay Pathak read Munshi Premchand’s short story ‘Eidgah’. Speaking about him, Seema also explained that since Vinay is also a writer, he enjoys the language and can draw new emotions from it.
Abhishek Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh
There are many similarities between Abhishek Bachchan and Riteish Deshmukh. They both come from illustrious families, are devoted fathers, down-to-earth, versatile actors and have a quirky sense of humor. Then it goes without saying that they are best friends. Their children can often be seen at each other’s birthday parties, and the chemistry between the two is palpable, whether it’s on the recent OTT talk show Case Toh Banta Hai or movies like Naach or Bluffmaster, in which they stood together in front of the camera. Like all healthy friendships, they’re not averse to getting on each other’s nerves and being there for each other when needed. Riteish has often spoken out about what a prankster Abhishek is on set and recently caused a laugh when he accused him of stealing props and even the heroine of the Mani Ratnam film Guru!
