Port Vale 1-2 Sunderland – BBC Sport

Sunderland scored on both sides of half-time and secured their place in the next round of the Carabao Cup with a win at Port Vale.

Josh Hawkes scored with a sovereign finish before Aiden O’Brien converted from the point.

Jamie Proctor pulled one back, but it wasn’t enough to give Darrell Clarke a win in his 500th game as manager.

Vale started well and had scored on 14 minutes when Brad Walker fouled the Sunderland goalkeeper.

The visitors began to take command while Jack Diamond and Hawkes were both close in the middle of the half.

The pressure paid off when Hawkes finished well after 40 minutes after Alex Pritchard cheered him up.

O’Brien doubled his lead with 50 minutes on the clock after Diamond was defeated by Aidan Stone.

Nathan Smith got close with a header in the 54th minute before Hawkes narrowly missed with a long-range shot.

After a good pass from David Worrall, Proctor shot from close range in the 67th minute and gave Vale hope.

The game was briefly interrupted a minute later after the floodlights on the railway stand went out.

Anthony Patterson parried a breathtaking save three minutes after stoppage time to fend off a strong header from Proctor.
