Zebedee Ink’s Deal With Mobile Game Studio Viker To Add BTC Rewards To Solitaire, Sudoku, Missing Letters

Seven days after financial technology and bitcoin payments company Zebedee announced it had secured a $35 million capital raise, the company has announced a new partnership deal with mobile games studio Viker. The two companies have enhanced three classic video games with Zebedee’s bitcoin rewards mechanic, including Solitaire, Sudoku, and the Missing Letters game.

Bitcoin Rewards to Enhance 3 Classic Mobile Video Games

Square Enix-backed Zebedee has been making a number of announcements lately, and last week the company announced that it had raised $35 million from strategic investors. Investors involved in Zebedee’s recent capital raise include Kingsway Capital, Raine Group, Initial Capital, Lakestar and Japanese gaming giant Square Enix. On July 26, Zebedee announced that it had signed a new partnership deal with mobile games studio Viker.

Zebedee and Viker have partnered in the past when the Bitcoin rewards mechanism was implemented in games like Wheel of Trivia, Amazeballs, and Balls King that can be played on iOS and Android devices. The success behind these games prompted the two companies to integrate BTC payments into classic mobile games that have been popular for the last decade. The three newly improved games include Sudoku, Solitaire and Missing Letters, a game similar to the Wordle mobile application.

In mid-April, Zebedee partnered with Fumb Games, creators of the mobile game Bitcoin Miner. When Fumb Games first introduced Bitcoin Miner, the game was a virtual mining application with no real rewards other than enhancing the gaming experience. After connecting to Zebedee’s technology utilizing BTC’s Lightning Network (LN), Bitcoin Miner players can now earn real BTC rewards by playing the game.

During Tuesday’s announcement, Dan Beasley, Viker’s co-founder, said the company firmly believes in play-to-earn (P2E) mechanics in games. “These games are played by literally billions of people for hundreds of hours over many years,” Beasley said. “But so far none of them have been able to earn anything for their time. Why continue when we are now in an era where games can reward you with more than just fun?” Beasley continued his statement by adding:

We have the largest play-and-earn portfolio of casual games with 500,000 players earning bitcoin each month while we continually release new games and improve the experience for our users. We believe Viker can bridge the gap between gaming and crypto through a seamless journey that empowers everyone to have fun and make money [and] safely enter the crypto world.

Adding crypto and NFT technology to video games has been a contentious topic among gamers and studios

The partnership with Zebedee and Viker follows a series of gaming companies looking into non-fungible tokens (NFTs) and crypto payment rewards. Viker has also incorporated NFT technology into some of its games. Square Enix, the video game company that invested in Zebedee, announced on July 21 that the company will be releasing Final Fantasy NFTs next year.

The day before Final Fantasy NFT was announced, Mojang Studios, creators of the world’s best-selling video game Minecraft, said that blockchain and NFT technologies are now banned from all of Mojang’s servers. The introduction of crypto assets and NFTs into video games has received mixed reviews from the gaming community, with some in favor of the idea and others vehemently opposed. In addition to Mojang Studios’ decision, major gaming companies Ubisoft and GSC Game World faced backlash over the inclusion of NFT last year.
