Lazarus is said to be moving Bitcoin after North Korea was reported for $600 million crypto theft in 2023

North Korean hackers Lazarus Group transferred $1.2 million worth of their ill-gotten gains from a coin mixer to a holding wallet, marking their largest transaction in over a month.

Data from blockchain analytics firm Arkham shows that the Lazarus Group wallet received 27,371 Bitcoin (BTC) in two transactions before sending 3.34 BTC to a previously used wallet. The coin mixer was not identified.

In general, a coin mixer, sometimes referred to as a tumbler, is a blockchain-based protocol that can be used to disguise ownership of cryptocurrencies by mixing them with other users' coins before redistributing them – so no one can tell who what got. Due to the transparency of blockchains, it is usually easy to track cryptocurrency origins and transfers.

The US Treasury Department has linked Lazarus Group to a $600 million cryptocurrency theft from the Ronin Bridge linked to Axie Infinity.

According to a report from TRM Labs last week, North Korea-linked hackers were involved in a third of all crypto exploits and thefts in 2023, stealing around $600 million in funds.

The Lazarus Group wallet now contains $79 million worth of Arkham-tagged wallets, including $73 million worth of Bitcoin and $3.4 million worth of Ether (ETH).

Metamask developer Taylor Monahan said the recent Orbit attack, which resulted in a loss of $81 million, followed similar patterns to previous Lazarus Group attacks.
