Big 12 Conference adds four new members

The Big 12 Conference today announces that Brigham Young University, the University of Central Florida, the University of Cincinnati, and the University of Houston will become members no later than the 2024-25 sport year.

This is the second time in the conference’s 26-year history that new members have joined. Baylor, Iowa State, Kansas State, Kansas, Oklahoma State, and Texas Tech have been members since the Big 12 began in 1996, with TCU and West Virginia joining in 2011.

“The Big 12 presidents and chancellors entered this process with a unique focus on strengthening and stabilizing the conference,” said Lawrence Schovanec, chairman of the Big 12 board of directors and president of Texas Tech University. “With the inclusion of these four traditional institutions, we have put the Big 12 on another road to success. We look forward to having BYU, UCF, Cincinnati and Houston under the Big 12 banner, both athletically and academically. “

Today’s actions were in line with the Big 12 Conference Bylaw 1.5.2.b.3, which required a majority of directors approval, and was unanimously approved by the eight remaining members.

Founded in 1875, Brigham Young University is located in Provo, Utah. The campus is home to 33,181 students completing degrees in 186 majors. The cougars compete in 21 different sports. You have won 12 all-time NCAA titles, 296 conference championships; and were home to 1,385 All-Americans, a Heisman Trophy winner, and 75 Olympians.

Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross-country skiing, soccer, golf, indoor athletics, outdoor athletics, swimming and diving, tennis, and volleyball. The women’s sports are basketball, cross-country skiing, golf, gymnastics, indoor athletics, outdoor athletics, softball, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball. The Cougars participate in all of the sports sponsored by the Big 12, except horse riding, rowing, and wrestling. The Big 12 sponsor all of the sports in which the Cougars compete, with the exception of men’s volleyball.

The University of Central Florida in Orlando, Florida is a metropolitan research university founded in 1963. The UCF is recognized nationwide for its innovation, affordability and promoting social mobility. With around 70,000 students, 13 universities and 230 degree programs, the university helps develop the skilled workers who advance the economy and solve the greatest challenges facing society. In the 16 Uni-Sport UCF sponsors, Knights teams have won a total of 148 conference championships. In 2017, his soccer team crowned an undefeated season with a Peach Bowl win over Auburn. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, soccer, golf, soccer, and tennis. The women’s sports are basketball, cross-country skiing, golf, indoor athletics, outdoor athletics, rowing, soccer, softball, tennis and volleyball. The Knights participate in all of the sports sponsored by the Big 12, except horse riding, gymnastics, swimming & diving, and wrestling. The University of Cincinnati is a public research university with 46,798 enrollments. UC was founded in 1819 and offers 414 degree programs. In its track and field history, Bearcat teams have come together to win 116 conference championships. The men’s basketball program has earned 41 conference titles and two national championships. Last season, the UC soccer team took a perfect record and a CFP 8th place on a Peach Bowl date with Georgia.

Cincinnati sponsors 18 college sports. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross-country skiing, soccer, golf, indoor athletics, outdoor athletics, and swimming and diving. The women’s sports are basketball, cross-country skiing, golf, indoor athletics, lacrosse, outdoor athletics, soccer, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball. The Bearcats participate in all of the sports sponsored by the Big 12 except horse riding, gymnastics, men’s tennis, rowing, softball, and wrestling. The Big 12 sponsor all sports that the Bearcats compete in, except women’s lacrosse.

Founded in 1927, the University of Houston is a Level I research institution with over 47,000 students enrolled in its 408 undergraduate, graduate and PhD programs. His athletic success includes 158 conference titles, 17 NCAA team champions, 1,059 All-Americans, 63 Olympians, and a Heisman Trophy winner. The final season was highlighted by the men’s basketball team running to the Final Four.

Houston sponsors 17 varsity sports. Men’s sports include baseball, basketball, cross country, soccer, golf, indoor athletics, and outdoor athletics. The women’s sports are basketball, cross-country skiing, golf, indoor athletics, outdoor athletics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis and volleyball. The Cougars participate in all of the sports sponsored by the Big 12, except horse riding, gymnastics, men’s tennis, rowing, and wrestling. The Big 12 sponsor every sport the Cougars compete in.

Since its 26th year, the Big 12 has produced over 720 Academic All-America selections and won national championship titles in 19 of the 23 sponsored sports. Its student athletes and teams have teamed up for over 700 individual NCAA titles and 69 national team championships.

Starting July 1, 2025, the Big 12 Conference will consist of 12 universities – Baylor, BYU, Central Florida, Cincinnati, Houston, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Oklahoma State, TCU, Texas Tech, and West Virginia. The additions increase the footprint of the Big 12 from five states and 40.2 million residents to eight states with a total of over 76.5 million residents.
