Best Canadian Betting Sites | Basketball Insiders

Nearly 10 years in the making, Bill C-218 is set to bring the benefits of single sports betting to Canada. According to the Toronto Star, Canadians wager more than $14 billion annually with online sportsbooks and a recent study by Deloitte Canada projected that Canadians will eventually place as much as $28 billion per year in bets. Basketball betting is expected to generate a significant portion of that handle, especially with how quickly the game has grown in Canada.

While basketball may not replace hockey as Canada’s National Sport, the game created by Canadian Dr. James Naismith has taken the country by storm in recent years. The upcoming basketball season will mark the first time that Canadian bettors will be able to take advantage of pre-game lines, in-play odds, and futures markets to earn a profit using their sports knowledge. Like with daily fantasy sports, fans that do their research have a chance to gain an edge on the oddsmakers.

In order to maximize the return of every wager and their overall return on investment, sharp bettors need to capitalize on odds and bonus offers across multiple sportsbooks. With new companies set to flood the Canadian sports betting market, choosing the right sportsbook can be hard, especially for new bettors.

To help Canadian bettors shoot their shot, the Basketball Insiders team has compiled a list of the top five best basketball betting apps available in Canada. Using algorithms and expert analysis, we have ranked the best online basketball betting sites in Canada below. How To Bet On Basketball

When it comes to betting on basketball, every night is a game night during the regular season. There are 1,230 games in a typical NBA campaign, giving bettors an endless number of markets to take advantage of. With over 350 Division-I teams, NCAA college basketball features hundreds of games every Saturday and several games during the week as well. In addition to the NBA and NCAA college basketball markets, Canadian bettors can also find odds for EuroLeague Basketball, Olympic Basketball, and more.

How Does Basketball Betting Work?

With props offerings starting to expand, basketball fans can wager on just about anything during the course of the season. While the NBA is the most popular basketball league in the world, there are several other markets for basketball bettors to finesse.

NBA Betting

Basketball is considered to be a point spread betting sport and it is no different in the NBA. The NBA features an 82-game regular-season schedule and a best-of-seven playoff series format that adds an extra level of excitement to the postseason. Teams are generally very evenly matched, which can make NBA betting very difficult. NBA fans can wager on game lines, game props, and player props for each individual contest or make season-long bets on the futures market.

College Basketball Betting

Like the NBA, NCAA College Basketball is also considered to be a point spread betting sport. However, there are a few nuances that make college basketball different from its professional counterparts.

While most NBA teams are generally evenly matched, the talent gap between college teams can be very wide. As a result, college basketball bettors will often see point spreads set at much higher numbers than in the NBA.

It can also be more difficult to find advanced statistics and information about college games, especially for schools playing in smaller conferences. This can make the point spreads and odds a little softer, which can make college basketball a more profitable market for basketball bettors.

College basketball also features more teams, giving bettors a chance to increase their volume, exploit soft lines, and capitalize on inefficiencies over the course of a season. According to KenPom.com, there are more than 350 Division-I basketball teams in the NCAA.

March Madness Betting

When it comes to basketball, March Madness takes the cake for the biggest betting event of the year. College basketball’s win-or-go-home tournament is still among the most exciting sporting events of the year, giving bettors 67 games to wager on during the three-week extravaganza. Every year, March Madness is highlighted by Cinderella stories and big underdogs making deep runs into the second weekend of the tournament and beyond.

EuroLeague Basketball Betting

Basketball isn’t just popular in North America and it seems every year a European player takes the NBA by storm. Most recently, former EuroLeague MVP Luka Doncic has turned into one of the league’s best and most exciting players, which has drawn even more attention to international basketball leagues around the world. A typical EuroLeague regular season consists of 34 games per team and culminates with the EuroLeague Final Four during the playoffs.

Basketball Betting Lines

While the props markets at different sportsbooks might vary, all bookmakers will offer the standard game lines for every basketball contest. Game lines generally consist of three betting options: point spread, money line, and total.

However, there are several other markets available for bettors to capitalize on.

To fully maximize their earning potential, bettors must understand how and when to cash in on different basketball betting markets.

Below, you can find a brief overview of some of the markets available to basketball bettors.

Point Spread

Point spread betting is the most popular way to wager on a basketball game.

In order to even out the odds and make it profitable to bet on both sides of a contest, the oddsmakers set a handicap for one team to win by a certain margin of victory. This is called the point spread.

In point spread betting, bookmakers designate the favorite in a match by using the minus sign (-) followed by the number of points that the team must win by for a bet to be settled as a winner. On the other hand, the plus sign (+) represents the underdog in a particular match.

If a bettor selects the favorite, the team must win by more than the projected margin of victory for the bet to be settled as a winner. On the other hand, when selecting the underdog to cover the spread, the team must win outright or lose by less than the projected number for the bet to be settled as a winner.

Example:

In the example above, we used a game line from a Men’s Basketball contest between Team USA and Team France in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. As the odds-on favorite to win the gold medal, Team USA entered the match favored by 13 points.

This means that bettors who backed Team USA would need them to win by 14 points or more for their bet to be settled as a winner. In this case, winning by exactly 13 points would constitute a “push”, which is settled as a “tie” between the bettor and the sportsbook, resulting in a refund of the bettor’s original stake.

On the other hand, bettors who select Team France to cover the spread will be rooting for them to win outright or lose the game by 12 points or fewer.

In the graphic shown above, a  $100 wager on Team USA to cover the spread would net bettors $92 in profit. Meanwhile, the same $100 wager on Team France to cover the spread would return bettors $90 in profit.

Money Line

For bettors that don’t want to concern themselves with winning the game by a predetermined margin, betting on money line markets might make more sense. When selecting a team on the money line, basketball fans are merely asked to select the winner of the contest at a fixed price. When predicting the outcome of a match, bettors can find hidden value on underdogs to win the game outright.

Example:

For bettors looking for more enticing odds, the money line can provide some additional value, especially when backing the underdog to win the match outright.

Going back to the same contest above, we used an example of a money line bet from Bet365. At 1.10, Team USA comes into the contest as heavy money line favorites while France offers bettors substantially more value at 7.50 odds.

While a $100 bet on Team USA to win would net bettors only $10 in profits, the bet slip above shows the potential of betting on underdogs in basketball. Risking $100 on Team France to win the contest would result in a total return of $750 and a total profit of $650.

Total

Betting on the total is another way that fans can identify value when one team is heavily favored in a contest.

During the basketball season, there will be times when bettors don’t want to wager on the outcome of a match but instead will have some conviction about whether a game will turn into a high or low-scoring affair. In these cases, wagering on the total might be a smarter choice.

When betting on the total, fans are only asked to predict whether both teams will combine to score greater or fewer than the projected number of points determined by the oddsmakers.

If the over is selected, the wager will be settled as a winner only if the two teams score more than the projected point total. Conversely, under bettors will only have their wager settled as a winner if the teams combine to score less than the projected point total set by the oddsmakers.

Example:

Let’s return to the Men’s Basketball game between Team USA and Team France in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. At 10Bet, the total for the game is set at 175 points.

Bettors that take the over will need both teams to combine for 176 points or more while under bettors will need the game to stay at or below 174 points for their selections to be settled as a winner.

Under bettors will have to eat a little bit of extra juice in this scenario. With former NBA Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert anchoring the middle of the France defense, a $100 bet on the under would net bettors only $86 in profits compared to $97 for over bettors.

Game Props

While game lines are still the most common type of market for basketball bettors, the props market is also beginning to gain steam. Most sportsbooks offer game props for every basketball game. Game props can help bettors to get creative and narrow down their selections to more specific markets. Basketball bettors can choose to wager on the first team to score 20 points, the first quarter money line, or the winning margin, among many other selections.

Betting on the first quarter money line is an example of a way that bettors can get more specific with their selections.

If bettors believe that a team is going to come out hot or has a decided advantage with their starters, then betting on the first quarter money line might be worth a look. Travel and league schedules also factor into how teams perform early in contests, which makes the first quarter money line an attractive market for game props bettors.

For this example, we will move to a different Men’s Basketball contest from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics between Argentina and Slovenia.

With Dallas Mavericks’ superstar Luka Doncic starring for Slovenia, Argentina comes into the game as underdogs. 10Bet is offering Slovenia to win the first quarter at 1.58 odds and Argentina at 2.35.

Once mastered, bettors can capitalize on game props to increase their volume and overall return on investment.

Player Props

Daily fantasy sports laid the groundwork for sports fans to earn money with their knowledge of individual players. With single-game betting now legal in Canada, bettors can use that same information to identify value and gain an edge on the oddsmakers in the player props market. Bettors can take a player to score over or under a certain amount of points, make a certain number of 3-pointers, or record a double-double, among many other offerings.

Example:

The player props market is one way that sportsbooks distinguish themselves from one another. Every oddsmaker offers the standard game lines and props for nearly all of the basketball markets, however, it is not uncommon for the player props to vary greatly from sportsbook to sportsbook.

We’ll return to the same Slovenia-Argentina game from above to take a look at an example of a player props bet. The oddsmakers have set the over/under for Doncic at 24.5 points while Argentina’s ageless veteran Luis Scola is pegged at 15.5 points.

Futures Bets

A futures bet is a speculative wager on an event that will take place at a subsequent time. Most bookmakers offer futures bets during the preseason, regular season, and playoffs. Bettors can predict the outright winner, conference winners, division winners, and more. The best basketball betting sites will also offer season specials, including odds for MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, Rookie of the Year, and more. Shopping for the best odds is imperative when it comes to the futures market, as the odds can vary greatly between the different sportsbooks.

Example:

To show bettors how important it is to shop for odds in the futures market, we’ll use the Denver Nuggets in this case.

At Bet365, the Denver Nuggets are a modest 14.00 odd to win the 2021-22 NBA Championship. That means $100 bettors would take home a smooth $1300 in profits and bring in a total return of $1400.

But if that same bettor were to shop for odds at Bodog, they would have received 21:1 odds. On a $100 wager, that would make a difference of $700, increasing profits by over 53 percent.

Parlay

For bettors with a greater appetite for risk, parlays are a great way to boost their odds and increase their profits. A parlay is a powerful tool that combines two or more selections into one single bet.

When making a parlay bet, the odds of each selection are multiplied together, increasing the odds and potential return of a single wager. If any selection on the bet slip loses, the entire bet is settled as a loss.

Some sportsbooks encourage bettors to make parlay bets by accumulator bonuses, enhanced odds, and parlay insurance, which refunds the stake of a bet if only one of the selections is settled as a loss.

Example:

Here, we move to Shangri La Live to exhibit the power and potential of parlay betting.

We executed a parlay bet using three Men’s Basketball contests from the 2020 Tokyo Olympics to generate a total odds of 6.46.

If all three teams cover the spread, a $100 bettor would earn $258 in profits while risking a total of $300 on three single-game bets.

In this case, the parlay above would generate a healthy $546 in profits while risking only $100.

Basketball Betting Odds

When basketball fans log on to their favorite sportsbook, they will notice that the odds and game lines are always changing. The odds and betting lines tend to fluctuate based on a couple of different factors.

To understand why line movements happen, first, we have to understand how the game lines are set. While point spreads and odds are set to even out the action on a particular contest, sportsbooks also try to anticipate how the sports betting market will react. Thus, game lines are often set with the intentions of the public in mind, and as a result, sportsbooks tend to overvalue and undervalue teams over the course of the season.

Once a game line is set, it may move based on a number of different factors related to betting. Point spreads and odds are influenced by the total number of bets on a match, the total amount of money wagered on each side, and the overall amount of risk that an oddsmaker is willing to take on a particular contest.

Game lines can also move when new information is released. When lineup changes occur or a key player is injured, it is not unusual for sportsbooks to temporarily remove the odds from the market and change them to a more reasonable number.

Basketball betting lines are generally very sharp but there are still disparities between the different sportsbooks throughout the day. Fans who are serious about turning a profit and maximizing their edge should consider funding accounts at multiple sportsbooks to shop for the best price.

Shopping for the best odds is simple. Once you’ve found the sportsbooks you are most comfortable with, compare the odds and point spreads for the markets that you are interested in betting on. Then, simply place your wager with the oddsmaker offering the best odds or most value for your particular selection.

For point spread and total bettors, getting +/- 0.5 on a point spread wager can be the difference between a win, loss, or push. On the other hand, adding +0.05 or +0.15 odds onto a money line wager might seem inconsequential but those small efficiencies can build up over time and help basketball bettors earn a profit over the course of a season.

Basketball Betting Tips

Point spreads are often the most popular market to wager on in basketball but there are more profitable markets available to basketball bettors. Picking underdogs to win on the money line can offer more value for basketball fans, and as a rule of thumb, home dogs tend to win more than road dogs.

Bettors can also find value by keeping track of injuries, targeting teams on win streaks, and betting on teams with wide home/road splits. Sharp bettors also tend to look for spots for regression and target teams playing within their division, where teams are more familiar with one another and there is more historical data to analyze.

Bankroll Management Tips

While every bettor sets out to make profitable selections, bankroll management is arguably the most important factor for long-term success in sports betting. When betting on basketball, fans should always remember to only risk what they can afford to lose.

The term unit is used to denote the standard dollar value of a bettor’s wager. Since everyone’s bankroll is different, units are used often instead of dollar amounts when discussing picks. The value of a unit can vary depending on several factors, including risk tolerance, total bankroll, and more.

In order to reduce their risk and add some stability to their account balance, disciplined bettors should try to restrict a standard betting unit to between one and five percent of their total bankroll. Depending on their confidence level, bettors can decide to wager more or less than one unit on a single bet. Adjusting the size and volume of their bets is another way that bettors can maximize their edge and overall return on investment.

Basketball Betting Trends

Basketball is one of the most popular sports to bet on in the world. As a result, the game lines are set very sharp and the oddsmakers are tough to beat.

Like with most sports, there is no method or betting system that works 100 percent of the time but there are certain trends that have helped bettors earn a lot of money. Sharp bettors use trends to identify value, spots for regression, and maximize their overall return on investment.

During every basketball season, the oddsmakers tend to overvalue and undervalue certain teams and players, creating opportunities for sharp bettors to capitalize on.

Below, we’ll use a few real-life examples of how spotting basketball trends can help bettors earn money over the course of a full season.

Example:

Let’s take a look back at the 2020-21 NBA regular season.

Point spread bettors found a lot of value with the Washington Wizards last year. Despite sporting a losing 34-38 overall record, Washington was the fourth-most profitable team to bet on against the spread. The Wizards finished 41-30-1 against the spread, bringing in prospective bettors nearly 10 units of profit over the course of the season.

The New York Knicks were the NBA’s most profitable team against the spread, covering the number 45 times in 72 games, earning bettors more than 17 units.

Over/Under bettors can also utilize trends to their advantage over the course of a basketball season.

According to NBA.com, the L.A. Lakers owned the NBA’s best defensive rating during the regular season, so it should come as no surprise that their games went under the total 43 times (43-28-1) in 72 games. Prospective bettors would have earned about 13.5 units by taking every Lakers game to stay under the projected total.

The same strategy works for over bettors as well.

The Indiana Pacers played at a faster pace than usual this season, ranking fourth in the NBA in pace and average possession length on offense. As a result, the Pacers went over the projected total 44 times (44-27-1) in 2020-21, bringing in 15.3 units for over bettors.

Basketball Betting Picks

There are several websites and sports betting touts that promise to earn bettors a profit in certain sports but it’s best to approach these claims with a healthy dose of skepticism. No matter if a tout is selling picks individually or as part of a larger company, bettors should take these assertions with a grain of salt.

Before you blindly back someone else’s selection, consider this.

Becoming a profitable sports bettor is notoriously difficult and the few individuals that have a real, long-term edge have more to gain by actually betting on the games than selling their selections.

Like in other sports, there is no such thing as a “lock” in a basketball game. So, when a sharp bettor has an edge on the oddsmaker, it is usually just a small efficiency that will only produce a substantial profit when used consistently over a long period of time.

When a tout sells their picks or system, they allow other bettors to jump on the same selection. As more bettors wager on the same picks, the oddsmakers adjust and the perceived edge disappears as a result.

Many websites offer free picks, in-depth analysis, predictions, statistics, and more, which can help bettors take decisive action or identify value in a particular contest. While tailing selections might not be a wise choice, seeking out analysis and picks from sportswriters and touts can add anticipation and entertainment value to the sports betting process.

Basketball In-Play Betting

In-play betting is one of the most profitable ways to wager on a basketball game. With the odds constantly moving on every possession, bettors can spot inefficiencies and capitalize on them during the course of a contest.

In basketball, each matchup follows a certain game flow, which can help bettors predict what will happen next. Basketball is also often referred to as “a game of runs”, which means that teams seize the momentum of a contest by scoring several times in a row. Fans that are following the game can feel the momentum swing from one play to the next and use their instincts to earn a profit.

While the in-play betting experience differs between the various sportsbooks, the best online oddsmakers offer live game lines, props, and player props markets during each basketball game. Basketball fans can take one team to win the first quarter, a player to score over a certain amount of points, or simply select the winner of the match with a money line wager.

Live or in-play betting allows bettors to get in on the action at any point in the game. Some bettors prefer to wait for pre-game favorites to fall behind before making their in-play bets while others have a better sense of when an underdog is playing well and primed for an upset.

No matter the strategy, mastering the art of live basketball betting can help fans take advantage of in-game events and information to reduce their risk and increase their profits.

What Is The Best Basketball Betting App?

For most sports fans, the best basketball betting app will be the one that they feel most comfortable using and that decision ultimately comes down to personal preference.

Most bettors tend to stick with an oddsmaker that suits their specific style of betting. Single-game basketball bettors might prefer a sportsbook with favorable odds or an early payout option. Instead, parlay bettors might opt to place their wagers with a sportsbook that offers daily odds boosts, accumulator bonuses, and parlay insurance.

Having an account with more than one bookmaker is another way that fans can get more out of their sports betting experience. Signing up to multiple sportsbooks allows sharp bettors to capitalize on better odds and a wider variety of markets, which can help them maximize their edge and overall returns. It also allows bettors to cash in on welcome bonuses, promo offers, free bets, and more.

Getting great odds and promotional offers can add instant value to your bankroll and are an essential part of a sharp bettor’s arsenal. However, they aren’t the only things that bettors look for in a quality sportsbook.

When choosing an online sportsbook, the user interface and speed of the app also play a role in the decision-making process. Most users want to use a sportsbook that is fast and easy to use. Speed and functionality are especially important for in-play bettors, who can also benefit from apps that display graphics and real-time information or allow fans to live stream the games that they wager on.

Whether bettors are searching for the best odds, most lucrative sign-up bonuses, or the most well-designed app, choosing one of the top five sportsbooks in Canada is a foolproof way to add value to your basketball betting experience.
