UVA Dualsportsman Jay Woolfolk Quits Football and Focuses More on Baseball – The Virginian-Pilot

University of Virginia dual-sport player Jay Woolfolk announced Thursday that he would be concentrating on baseball and no longer playing football for the Cavaliers.

As a quarterback and pitcher, Woolfolk had played both sports for UVA since enlisting in 2021.

“Coach (Tony) Elliott has done so much for me from day one on the grounds,” Woolfolk said via virginiasports.com. “I will always remember his way of teaching how not only to be a player but also to be a man. It’s been a great year with him. I’ve reached a point where it’s best for me now to focus on my future in baseball. I wish the football program and my teammates all the best.”

Woolfolk has appeared in nine football games over the last two seasons. In 2021, he completed 22 of 41 passes for 245 yards and rushed for 72 yards on 24 carries, attempting just two passes and two carries last season.

At the lozenge, Woolfolk has led the Cavaliers’ pitching team in substitutions for the last two seasons. He has a 2.89 ERA with 93 strikeouts in 71.2 innings. In 2022, he received Freshman All-America honors from two media outlets.

He made nine saves that season and earned a spot on the US baseball collegiate team.

CW broadcasts ACC football and basketball games

The CW Network announced Thursday that it has secured exclusive broadcast rights to 50 ACC football and basketball games each season through 2026-27.

The first football game will air on The CW on Saturday, September 9, when Pitt takes on non-conference opponent Cincinnati.

Games are broadcast every Saturday afternoon and evening throughout the season.

The channel plans to broadcast 13 soccer games, 28 men’s basketball games and nine women’s basketball games in the coming season.

Tickets for the IL Championship go on sale

Tickets for the International League Championship Series at Harbor Park are on sale soon.

The Tides have already secured a spot in the best-of-three series, which will take place September 26-28, by winning the first half of the International League season.

Each game starts at 6:35 p.m

Season ticket holders, 18-game plan holders, and Sunday season plan buyers will have the opportunity to purchase tickets starting at 10 a.m. Friday. Junior Tides, Senior Tides and Group Leaders can purchase tickets starting Monday at 10am.

Public ticket sales begin July 18 at 10 a.m. At this point, playoff tickets will be available online at NorfolkTides.com/Tickets or at the Harbor Park box office.

The Tides resume play after a four-day hiatus and host Scranton/Wilkes-Barre on Friday at 6:35 p.m.

VT-Catcher enters the transfer portal

According to Baseball America author Peter Flaherty III, Brody Donay, Virginia Tech’s freshman catcher, has entered the transfer portal.

The 6-5, 215-pound Lakeland, Fla. native hit .260 with 12 homers and 38 RBIs last season and made the All-ACC Freshman Team.

Pilots want to win over Tri-City

James Madison’s Mason Dunaway went 5-for-5 with two RBIs and VMI’s Justin Starke went 2-for-5 with three RBIs as the Peninsula Pilots defeated the Tri-City Chili Peppers 11-6 in Hampton on Wednesday night.

Monroe College’s Christopher Martinez added two hits, an RBI and two runs for the Pilots.

NSU’s Jones will once again coach the TBT team

Norfolk State men’s basketball coach Robert Jones will return to coach HBCUnited at the basketball tournament.

The event features 64 teams competing in a single-elimination round for a $1 million prize pool.

Jones was the coach of the team that made the tournament’s Sweet 16 last year.

“When I was asked to coach HBCUnited again, I was reluctant, but I have made the decision to continue building the HBCU basketball brand on a national platform,” Jones said via nsuspartans.com. “Following the Sweet 16 performance last year, we look forward to building on that.”

The team will open the game in the Lubbock, Texas area against The Lab on July 19 at 4:00 p.m.

• William & Mary basketball rookie Anahi-Lee Cauley will represent Team Puerto Rico this week in the GLOBL JAM, a 5-on-5 under-23 basketball tournament in Toronto. Cauley joined the Tribe this spring after spending two seasons at Villanova.
• According to Flex Basketball Management, former Old Dominion star Tyreek Scott-Grayson will start his pro career in Romania with CSMTimişoara.

Admirals re-sign the top two scorers

Norfolk Admirals have signed forwards Ryan Foss and Danny Katic for the 2023/24 season.

Foss, 27, led Norfolk in assists (29) and points (45) during his pro season in the United States. He added 16 goals.

“We want players on the rise and I think Ryan is emulating that,” Admirals head coach Jeff Carr said.

22-year-old Katic led the Admirals in goals (18) and finished second in points (40).

The Admirals will open the 2023-24 season on October 20 in Savannah.

• Norfolk State volleyball player Shonte Seale has been selected to play for the Barbados senior team at the Caribbean Volleyball Championships taking place July 23-30. The experienced outside attacker was named the team’s vice-captain.
