UConn campus powered by multi-sport momentum – NBC Connecticut

UConn Athletics has been building some serious momentum within its revenue sports this year.

Right now, three different teams hold spots in the nation’s top 10 as UConn Football returns to a bowl game for the first time since 2015.

A rainy Wednesday before exams might initially give the wrong impression, but the student body has plenty of juice when it comes to supporting their teams.

“I plan to study all day today, but nine o’clock is play time. It’s on,” said UConn senior Joe Dowd.

The energy surrounding huskies spans both fall and winter and a variety of different surfaces, but is based on similar trends of success.

“It’s electric,” senior Frank Romeo said. “I think we have a couple of teams in the top 10.”

On the soccer field, UConn will travel to Myrtle Beach when they face Marshall in their first bowl game since 2015. With additional flights from Avelo, there is additional interest in traveling south.

“You’re bowl bound! We could actually go!” said Romeo.

“I’m really excited about the football team,” said Dowd. “I find [Jim] Mora’s first year was a great success.”

Then there’s men’s hockey with an 8-3-2 conference start good for first place at Hockey East with a new facility primed for use.

“What really excites me is ice hockey. They’re building this new hockey stadium on campus, so I think it’s very big,” said sophomore Jacob Pardi.

But of course, for many, the fuel that drives the Husky Nation goes back to Gampel.

“The atmosphere there was crazy. it was crazy Everyone was crazy,” said sophomore Rachel Possidento after attending a men’s basketball game that season.

Despite multiple serious injuries, the women continue to struggle as the sixth-ranked team in the nation.

“They really show team spirit,” said Diane Whitney, UConn Pre-Law Advisor.

Meanwhile, the men’s basketball team has taken college basketball by storm.

“It feels like we’re finally back,” senior Cole Cassettari said.

A 9-0 start puts them fifth in the national poll and gives them their best placing since their championship run in 2011.

“It’s all in group chat now. examination [the rankings] every week when it comes out,” Romeo said.

So while Trials week is on, three top 10 teams and a trip to a bowl are more than enough to get Romeo talking…

“Go huskies.”
