HILTON HEAD, SC – The Arkansas women’s tennis team had two singles players competing in the ITF Hilton Head 15K, starting today with the singles and doubles peloton.
Senior Kelly Keller and freshman Carolina Gomez-Alonso both won their singles games in the Round of 32 and advanced to the main draw. Selected as a wild card in the main draw, Keller faced fellow wild card Madison Hill in the first round. Keller won in dominant fashion, defeating Hill 6-0, 6-2. Freshman Carolina Gomez was No. 5 in the tournament and will face Georgia Bulldog, Mai Nirundorm, in her first match. Gomez prevailed 6-2, 6-4 as the winner.
In doubles, Keller and Gomez met for the first time in the round of 16 main draw. The duo proved powerful, defeating Virginia Tech’s Elizabeth Danailova and Ellasyn DeFord 6-1, 6-2.
The tournament will continue tomorrow with the singles round of 16 and the doubles quarterfinals. Kelly Keller meets Iowa State’s Ange Oby Kajuru and Carolina Gomez meets Virginia Tech’s Ozlem Uslu, with both games starting at 9:00 a.m. CT. Doubles action doesn’t start until 1:00 pm CT at the earliest, when Keller and Gomez take on No. 1 doubles seed Lexington Reed and LSU’s Pair Corley.
