Top cycling team signs Kiwi, who only started the sport 2 years ago

Imagine that you only started road cycling two years ago, only to be picked up by one of the largest and most dominant cycling teams in the world.

Well, that’s the actual story of Kim Cadzow from Wanaka.

The 20-year-old has been confirmed to be riding for Jumbo Visma on a two-year deal and told 1News she can’t quite believe it.

“I actually had a few online meetings and my phone was by my side and all of a sudden it just buzzes, buzzes, buzzes, buzzes,” Cadzow told 1News.

“I still wake up in the morning and I’m like, ‘Did it really happen?’ I can hardly believe it.”

Not many can do that.

Two years ago, triathlon was her thing, but that’s where she was discovered by Cadzow’s trainer.

“He said, ‘Maybe you should think about just trying road cycling,’ and I was like, ‘I don’t want to do that. Why would I want to do that?”

Luckily she did and it’s been a rapid rise ever since training up and down The Remarkables, winning the U23 national time trial and a second place finish at the Oceania Championships.

Cudzow meets her Dutch team in November; until then, she has the training gear to last her until she can start pursuing her new, ultimate goals; up the mountains at the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de Femmes.
