The Milwaukee Bucks are inking a deal to make Adrian Griffin their head coach after spending the past five seasons as an assistant with the Toronto Raptors, a person familiar with the situation told The Associated Press.
Griffin would replace Mike Budenholzer, who was fired after the top-seeded Bucks’ surprise loss to the Miami Heat in the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs.
ESPN and The Athletic first reported on the Bucks’ selection of Griffin.
WNBA: Breanna Stewart scored 11 of her 21 points in the crucial third quarter, helping the New York Liberty to an 81-65 win over visiting Connecticut Sun.
Courtney Vandersloot finished the game with 18 points and 10 assists for the Liberty (2-1). Sabrina Ionescu added 17 points.
Tiffany Hayes had 16 points and DeWanna Bonner had 14 to lead the Sun (3-1).
FOOTBALL
GERMANY: Jamal Musiala scored in the 89th minute to give Bayern Munich their 11th consecutive Bundesliga title with a 2-1 win in Cologne after Borussia Dortmund missed a chance to end Bayern’s championship streak by beating Borussia Dortmund at home Mainz drew 2-2.
Dortmund and Bayern finished level on points, but Bayern secured the title on goal difference.
Despite the championship, Bayern announced that they had fired CEO Oliver Kahn and sporting director Hasan Salihamidžić.
ENGLAND: Luton captain Tom Lockyer was taken to hospital after collapsing during the Championship playoff final against Coventry, but the team said he was conscious and responsive.
Lockyer fell to the ground unharmed while kicking backwards, then appeared to collapse trying to get back up. The defender received medical attention for several minutes before being carried away on a stretcher.
Luton won on penalties to earn promotion to the Premier League for the first time. It last played in England’s top flight in 1991/92, a year before the league was renamed the Premier League.
GOLF
EUROPEAN TOUR: Pablo Larrazabal will take a one-shot lead and advance to the finals of the KLM Open after a clean-shooting 5-under-67 win in Cromvoirt, Netherlands.
The Spaniard made five birdies for a total of 10 under 206.
Denmark’s Rasmus Hojgaard (67) and Spain’s Adrian Otaegui (69) were Larrazabal’s closest pursuers.
MOTOR RACE
FORMULA ONE: Max Verstappen put in an excellent final lap, taking pole position at the Monaco Grand Prix and denying veteran Fernando Alonso his first pole in eleven years.
Verstappen touched the walls of the sinewy street circuit and undercut Alonso’s time by just 0.084 seconds. It was his fourth pole of the season and the 23rd of his career.
ICE HOCKEY
WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP: Germany scored a late equalizer and then defeated the United States 4-3 in overtime to set up a final against Canada in Tampere, Finland.
Earlier, youthful striker Adam Fantilli kicked off Canada’s 4-2 win over Latvia.
TO GO BIKING
Italy trip: Primož Roglič almost secured the Giro d’Italia title by passing leaders Geraint Thomas on the penultimate stage despite suffering a mechanical problem in the uphill time trial.
Roglič started the stage 26 seconds behind Thomas – who was trying to become the oldest Giro champion in history – but was 40 seconds faster than the British cyclist at the end of the demanding climb of Monte Lussari. That put Roglič 14 seconds ahead of Thomas before the mainly ceremonial closing stages of the race.
It is the fourth Grand Tour victory for Roglič, who won the Spanish Vuelta three years in a row from 2019 to 2021.
TENNIS
GENEVA OPEN: Unseeded Nicolás Jarry defeated Grigor Dimitrov 7-6(1), 6-1 to claim his second title of the season and third of his career.
Dimitrov was aiming for his first title since the 2017 ATP Tour Finals. Instead, 54th-placed Jarry capped a streak of three straight wins against current or former top-10 players – two-time defending champions Casper Ruud, Alexander Zverev and Dimitrov.
STRASBOURG: Two-time Grand Slam semifinalist Elina Svitolina won her first WTA title in almost two years – and first since becoming a mother – by beating Anna Blinkova 6-2, 6-3 in the final of the Internationaux de Strasbourg in France defeated.
