Physiotherapists support patients to get back into sports

(COLORADO SPRINGS) – Children’s Hospital Colorado Therapy Care on Telstar is helping serve the Pikes Peak region by providing a partial hospitalization pediatric behavioral health program and outpatient therapy care service.

Resident in the building is a physical therapist, Hannah Allgood, who helps her patients manage injuries and guides them to a successful recovery.

“So we work mostly with youth athletes and it can be anything from knee pain to surgery,” Allgood said. “So it differs per patient. Some patients need surgery, I treat them like a year-long process and that’s why we spend a lot of time together.”

Allgood spent more than two years with Isla Eaton, who suffered a cruciate ligament injury.

The two worked together to restore strength and mobility to her knee.

“I think everything I’ve done here has really helped a lot, especially getting to where I am now, and working with Hannah has been amazing,” said Eaton.

Therapy Care on Telstar offers a variety of services including physical, occupational, rehabilitation, sports medicine, audiology, and speech and learning therapy.

When it comes to processing an injury, Allgood shared the mental struggle many patients must overcome to get back into the sport.

“It’s really challenging when you’re an athlete and then all of a sudden you literally can’t walk,” Allgood said. “Having the opportunity to be a part of that and see their development over the year, not just as an individual but then bringing them onto the field and that comes with its own set of challenges as most of these athletes usually get injured are.” on the field.”

The two practice a soccer drill outside, training stability and mobility.

Eaton shared the thoughts that went through her mind as she got back on the field.

“But yeah, I was definitely nervous because the level I’m playing at is really high and the people are good and you have to tackle so many things that it can be scary,” said Eaton.

Allgood comes from a sporting background – he plays soccer and basketball. She said she is trying to get in touch with her patients to address their concerns and ensure they get back on the field.

“She’s great. She was really great,” Eaton said. “Not only because she’s an athlete herself, because that really helps me get more involved with things, but she’s also a great person, [and] It’s fun to talk to him.”

Eaton’s success in physical therapy also spilled over onto the football pitch, as she was recently named a Team USA Under-16 footballer and is traveling to New Zealand in July.

“And then my coach even says the reason I got it was because I had to work hard after my injury… Hannah was a big part of it because without her I wouldn’t have been where I am now,” Eaton said.

Now, two years later, Earon easily dribbles between cones before scoring.

When not tending to her patients, Allgood is an avid trail runner. She flew to Austria on Friday night to represent Team USA at the USATF World Running and Mountain Championships.
