Sterling Multisport Star Richardson Named KMAland Nebraska Girls Basketball Player of the Year | Sports

(Sterling) — Sterling’s Macy Richardson is a self-confessed competition junkie. If there’s a competition, she wants to be there. How else to explain that a Division I softball signee continues to dominate in several sports other than softball?

After another dominant basketball season, the Jets star and all-time leading scorer is the KMAland Nebraska Girls Basketball Player of the Year.

“I think it’s been a big year,” Richardson told KMA Sports on Wednesday’s Review show. “We had a lot of vacancies to fill. We lost a few key players from last year but everyone did well to play their role and do their part for the team.”

Richardson, who broke the all-time record at the time in January, did a little of everything for Sterling this season, averaging 19.4 points, 10.0 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.0 steals per game when the Jets went 17-7 after jumping into the D1 class.

“I couldn’t have done it without my teammates and coaches,” said the always humble Richardson. “I’m very grateful to them and what they’re doing for me, but like I said, I was really hoping to make it back to the state another year.”

While the state tournament was not played, Richardson helped lead the Jets to the state tournament every time for the past three years, including their junior year when Sterling finished third. With the physical tools on her side, Richardson says her biggest improvements came from the mental side of the game.

“During my freshman year, I struggled to deal effectively with adversity,” she said. “I think I’ve really grown from not just handling situations on my own, but also helping the team and being a reassuring aspect on the pitch for everyone.”

Richardson believes that much of this growth can be attributed to being constantly in competitive situations. In addition to basketball, she is a volleyball standout, one of the top track and field athletes in the state, and has committed to playing softball at the University of Minnesota.

“For me, the competition is really tough,” she said. “It’s something I would urge in younger kids. Anything you can do to put yourself under pressure just makes it easier for you in the big situations.”

Some might wonder why Richardson continues to do what she does. Her future lies in a major Division I softball program, but when it comes to one of the greatest athletes in KMAland Nebraska history, she wouldn’t have it any other way. And as it turns out, that’s exactly what college coaches are looking for.

“When I spoke to most of the college coaches throughout the recruitment process, they really encouraged me to be a multi-sport athlete,” Richardson said. “It’s a great way to be mentally and physically prepared when you reach the next level. Coaches take it to the next level, so I would definitely encourage younger kids to be multisport athletes.”
