Sports betting continued to generate revenue for the treasury, generating $11.8 million in tax revenue in April. Along with casino gaming, the state took in $40.3 million in taxes from gaming operations last month.
April’s final results were higher than March, when the state collected $38.9 million in taxes, despite online sports betting being active for just 22 days that month.
Total sports betting in Massachusetts, which includes live betting in casinos and online betting from the six sites licensed to accept mobile betting, was $579 million in April, up from $568 million in April March.
Overall, sports betting generated $21.129 million in tax revenue after just 52 days of mobile betting. and two months plus a day of retail betting. It is estimated that the state generates between $60 million and $70 million in tax revenue from sports betting annually, according to bookies.com, which tracks gambling activity across the country.
Gasoline prices in Massachusetts have fallen
Gasoline prices fell 2 cents last week to $3.44 a gallon, according to the latest AAA Northeast survey.
“Increasing demand for gasoline would normally push up prices at the pump,” said Mary Maguire, vice president of public and government affairs for the AAA Northeast, “but the cost of oil has remained low recently, leaving motorists cautious in light of the upcoming Memorial Day should benefit from stable prices at the pumps.”
The price at the pump is 5 cents higher than a month ago, but $1.14 cheaper than this time last year, according to price data.
The national average for a gallon of gasoline is $3.53, according to the most recent survey, nine cents higher than the Massachusetts average.
