That 2023 Toyota Yaris Cross The range now includes a GR Sport class, making it the fourth class of city SUV to be launched in Australia.
Price from $35,840 plus road expensesThe Yaris Cross GR Sport costs $3,850 more than the Yaris Cross GXL 2WD Hybrid it’s based on and $2,150 less than the flagship Yaris Cross Urban AWD Hybrid.
The Yaris Cross GR Sport — GR short for Gazoo Racing, Toyota’s performance sub-brand — is the third addition to the company’s GR Sport lineup, following the small SUV C-HR and the LandCruiser 300 Series all-wheel drive.
While full Toyota GR cars – like the GR Supra and GR Yaris – are high-performance vehicles, the GR Sport models are mostly limited to cosmetic changes and minor mechanical upgrades.
In addition to the standard features of the GXL, the Yaris Cross GR Sport comes with a new black mesh grille, a redesigned rear lower bumper design with a rear diffuser, 18-inch dual five-spoke alloy wheels, red brake calipers with black GR logos, mirror caps and GR emblem.
Interior changes include new sports seats – with black suede-like center section, faux leather upholstery and light gray contrasting stitching – an updated steering wheel, GR logos (headrests, steering wheel, smart keys), aluminum pedals, and a gray gear knob and instrument panel and interior door panels.
The Toyota Yaris Cross GR Sport also gets an additional USB-C port (alongside the standard USB-A port) as well as an air purification system developed by Panasonic – marketed as “nanoe X air ionisation”.
According to Toyota, the Yaris Cross GR Sport has benefited from a number of suspension tweaks – including retuned front springs, wishbones and bump stops, and a stiffer rear end, resulting in the new variant riding 10mm lower than existing model classes.
An underfloor brace and a second brace between the cross members were also added.
Toyota’s latest Yaris Cross variant can be ordered in five exterior colors – Frosted White, Stunning Silver, Ink, Atomic Rush and Lunar Blue – while the wider range now includes Frosted White, which has replaced Crystal Pearl.
A 1.5 liter three-cylinder petrol engine with 67 kW/120 Nm is combined with two electric motors for a total of 85 kW and drives the front wheels via a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).
Toyota claims that the Yaris Cross GR Sport can achieve a stated mixed fuel economy of 3.8 liters per 100 km.
The nine existing Yaris Cross variants remain unchanged for 2023, with a full list of standard features and options at the end of this story.
