Boys’ volleyball is on its way to becoming a sanctioned high school sport after being twice rejected by the Minnesota State High School League.
The league’s board last week approved boys’ volleyball as an emerging sport for the next year and recommended fully sanctioning it in two years’ time.
Boys’ volleyball has been a club sport for a number of years, organized by the Minnesota Boys High School Volleyball Association.
“Our organization will bridge the gap with the Minnesota State High School League and we will work together,” said association president Jenny Kilkelly. “So they’re definitely still going to be a spring league that’s going to run, it’s just not going to be fully sanctioned and until fully operated by the Minnesota State High School League [2024]-25 school year.”
Kilkelly expects more than 60 schools in Minnesota to offer boys’ volleyball as a sport in the spring.
A final vote on officially sanctioning high school boys’ volleyball is expected in May.
