NEW MEXICO (KRQE) — The perseverance of a freshman at Logan High School has earned him a major honor. Ace Whitson lost the lower half of his right leg in an accident two years ago while he was repairing a fence with his father.
After weeks of rehab and physical therapy, Whitson returned to the football field, basketball court and arena. On Monday, Whitson was named a recipient of this year’s Spirit of the Sport Award from the New Mexico Activities Association. “It’s almost no big deal for him. It’s just a way of life and he doesn’t see what the big deal is while others can’t believe you can do that,” said Wade Whitson, Ace’s father.
Whitson is now nominated for the National High School Spirit of Sport Award. “It’s something you have to get through and you just can’t let that stop you,” Ace said.
