Liverpool 1-0 Manchester City: Mohamed Salah hits the winner

Mohamed Salah has now scored six goals in 11 Premier League games against Manchester City

Liverpool put their recent struggles in the Premier League behind to end Manchester City’s unbeaten run in a gripping and heated encounter at Anfield that saw Jurgen Klopp sent off.

City, spurred on by Erling Haaland’s goals, were in fine form but Liverpool finally found the form that left them for much of the season to defeat the reigning champions.

Haaland was exceptionally absent from the scorers’ chart and it was Liverpool’s talisman Mohamed Salah who made the crucial contribution as he scored a clearance from keeper Alisson after a slip by Joao Cancelo who beat Ederson with a commanding finish 14 minutes from time.

Ederson had made a brilliant save to deny Salah in a similar one-on-one situation, while City manager Pep Guardiola was furious that a Phil Foden goal that would have put his side ahead was overruled by the video assistant referee was ruled out for Haaland’s foul on Fabinho.

This wasn’t to be Haaland’s day, despite scoring two saves from Alisson, but Anfield were happy as Liverpool finally showed why they were consistently City’s number one threat.

Tempers boiled over in a frantic final and Klopp was sent off by referee Anthony Taylor for his protests after feeling Salah had been fouled – but when temperatures cool he will be overjoyed with a clear win.
