Michael DeLong, a professor at Keizer University, recently shared insights into factors that support the best sports cities with WalletHub, a personal finance website.
DeLong pointed out that while a strong community following is important, working with neighboring and local city leaders also plays a role in a team’s success, as it helps drive the construction of new stadiums and arenas as needed. Fan support is based not just on a team’s victories, but on overall game day experience, as fans support either hometown teams or those who play in neighboring cities, such as the Dallas Cowboys who play in Arlington, or root for the San Francisco 49ers, who play in Santa Clara.
Many teams seem to reflect the spirit of their hometowns, DeLong noted, while noting the Pittsburgh Steelers’ strong and resilient image and the Miami Dolphins’ “flashy” personality. He also reminded readers that while the profitability of a publicly funded stadium may depend on the city and the team, such structures often pay off in the long run through revenue generation and job creation. A lifelong Dallas Cowboys fan and also a fantasy sports enthusiast, DeLong shared that he’s pleased there’s room for both forms of fandom.
