Jules Kounde: Barcelona need to sell defender Xavi to register him

Jules Kounde missed the opening game against Rayo Vallecano

Barcelona need to sell players to register French defender Jules Kounde, says manager Xavi.

Kounde, 23, arrived from Sevilla in July for a reported fee of £42million but was unable to play as the club must comply with La Liga financial rules.

Barka registered four more new players the night before their league opener last weekend after using several “economic levers” to release funding.

“At the moment we don’t know anything. We are on standby,” said Xavi.

The coach, whose side face Real Sociedad on Sunday, added: “We’re waiting. Kounde is a great leader and a great player. Hopefully he’ll show it soon – tomorrow when he can play.”

“He has trained very well, I see him in a good mood, but we have to sell players to be able to register him.”

Chelsea are said to be interested in striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, while Dutch striker Memphis Depay has been linked with a departure from the Spanish club.

“The transfer market ends on August 31 and we don’t know what will happen,” said Xavi.

“Auba and Memphis are still here, so we’ll use them tomorrow. But the priority is to register Kounde.”

Most recently, new signings Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen, Robert Lewandowski and Raphinha were involved 0-0 draw against Rayo Vallecano on Saturday.
