Fort Worth is hosting the 2023 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championship this weekend

FORT WORTH (CBSNewsTexas.com) – Once again a major sporting event has found its way to Fort Worth.

Beginning Thursday, some of the nation’s top gymnasts will compete in the 2023 NCAA Women’s Gymnastics Championship.

For women’s gymnastics fans like Madison Schuler, this week is expected to be one of excitement.

“I’ve always watched the national championships at home, so I’m definitely looking forward to seeing them in person and seeing all the gymnasts that I see at home,” she said.

Student-athletes from eight different varsities took some practice time ahead of Thursday’s semifinals and Saturday’s national championships at Dickies Arena.

“This is the number one trend for women on social media right now,” said Fort Worth Sports Commission executive director Jason Sands. “We’re expecting between 15,000 and 20,000 to attend these events. A lot of them are visitors and I think we’re going to see some of the best attendance we’ve seen at this championship.”

Sands says they’ve worked hard to position Fort Worth as a premier sports destination.

More recently, other major events such as the Olympic Trials, the first and second round games of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament, and the Women’s Tennis Association Finals have been held.

“Dickies Arena was an absolute game changer for us,” he said. “They attract so many visitors to our market, but also bring great exposure. Many of these events are televised nationally and even internationally.”

The economic impact is expected to be over $4 million. If you want to be there, you can still get tickets.
