Flivvers performs strongly on Splash and Dash | News, Sports, Jobs

MARQUETTE — The Kingsford High School swim team put in a strong performance at the Splash and Dash meetup at Marquette Senior High School on Saturday.

“We made some changes in practice and the results were excellent,” said Flivvers head coach Jim Lindstrom. “Almost the entire team achieved personal bests at this meeting.”

The 50 Freestyle was the only event that allowed competitors to qualify for the UP Finals at that meeting. Kingsford already had a few swimmers who reached that mark in other competitions this season, but on Saturday Pierre Hurtubise and first-year swimmer Josh Early joined them in the qualifying swim. The editing time was 11:60 p.m. and Early clocked exactly this time. Hurtubise posted a 27.46.

Joey Lundholm, Zane Cahee and Kaden Matuszewski are the other Flivver boys who have already qualified. On the girls’ side, Sierra Scott cut their qualifying time by half a second to finish fifth overall with a 28.51.

Cahee had a second place finish for the Flivvers in the 50 breaststroke with a 31.99, in a close finish with winner Nathan Schoenow of Manistique who scored 31.83.

“It was one of the best races I’ve seen from him so far,” said Lindstrom. “Joey Lundholm looked good at the 100 IM and finished just a second behind the winner.”

Kingsford’s only event winner that day was Nahia Cristoblena in the 50 breaststroke with a time of 34.41.

Other top ten finishes for the Flivvers on Saturday included Lundholm (fifth) and Cahee (seventh) in the 50 Free; Scott with a fourth in the 50 butterfly; Cristobalena (sixth) and Alyssa Englund (tenth) in the 50 backstroke; and Early with a ninth in the 50 backstroke.

Best relay performances included Lundholm, Matuszewski, Cahee and Hurtubise with third place in the 200m individual medley and the 200m free; Scott, Olivia Rake, Cristobalena and Petra Grubb with fourth place in the girls’ 200m individual medley; and Scott, Grubb, Marley Dixon and Cristobalena with a fourth in the girls 200 free.

Kingsford have two home meetings scheduled this week. The Flivvers host Manistique this afternoon and Houghton on Thursday.

Both meetings are scheduled to begin at 4:00 p.m. at the Northern Lights YMCA Dickinson Center.
