Penang seems to be a popular hotspot for Hong Kong and Chinese celebrities.
In recent months we’ve seen the likes of Ruco Chan, Aaron Kwok, Bosco Wong and Dickson Lee expressing their love for the beautiful state.
Hong Kong actor Philip Keung and Chinese artist Samantha Ko were also in George Town last month for their film Lock War.
In an interview with China Press, Keung revealed that he was interested in making a film about Penang because of his cultural heritage.
“I have discussed my plans with the Penang government before but they are still ongoing and have not been confirmed yet,” he shared, adding that his love for Penang began six years ago while he was vacationing in the state.
Before filming Lock War, the 56-year-old was away from Penang for three years due to the pandemic.
Though the lifestyle of the people of Penang has changed since then, Keung said he loves how Penang’s “human touch” has remained unchanged.
“People in Penang can speak Cantonese, so it’s easy to communicate with them and befriend them. In a way, Penang feels very nostalgic to me.
“It’s weird that I’ve never seen certain places before and yet they feel kind of familiar,” he explained.
Meanwhile, his co-star Ko told China Press that she’s interested in buying a house there, even though it’s her first visit to Penang.
“I’m happy because Penang brought me so many good memories. It’s such a welcoming city too.
“I love the sea views in Batu Ferringhi so maybe I could get a property somewhere by the sea,” she explained, adding that real estate agents can always contact her to recommend good properties in Penang.
During her three-week stay in the city, Ko revealed that she used the breaks between filming to go sightseeing.
The 37-year-old said George Town is her favorite place to be.
“There is an area in George Town that has mini-libraries made from abandoned phone boxes. It made the biggest impression on me.
“At the time, I asked the driver to turn around and got out of the car to take some photos,” Ko shared.
Financed by award-winning actor Louis Koo, Lock War stars Keung, Ko, Raymond Wong, Benz Hui and Malaysian actress Yumi Wong.
It is expected to be released by the end of this year.
