UConn climbed to its highest position in the ` Top 25 since the 2008-09 season in Monday’s most recent poll, moving up one spot to No. 2 just behind No. 1 Purdue. The Huskies amassed 21 first-place votes, down from a season-high 15 a week ago, after easily overcoming Butler on the road in a 68-46 conference-opening win on Saturday.

Purdue retained its first spot in the poll for a second straight week by receiving the remaining 40 first-place votes. This marked the first time all season that only two teams received first place votes as the top of the sport began to separate from the rest of the pack. UConn (12-0) and Purdue (11-0) are two of just five teams to lose this season.

UConn may have moved up this week after their impressive opening win in the Big East regardless of the results, but last week’s No. 2 Virginia fell at home to Houston and made the switch easier for voters this week. Virginia fell to No. 6 in the most recent ` Top 25, while Houston took UConn’s last spot at No. 3. Rounding out this week’s top five are No. 4 Kansas and No. 5 Arizona.
