Chelsea financial results: Blues announce £121.3m for 2021-22

Chelsea have announced a £121.3m net loss for 2021-22.

Despite overall revenue increasing from £434.9m to £481.3m year-on-year, the club had “extraordinary expenses and lost revenue” due to government sanctions imposed on former owner Roman Abramovich following the Russian invasion of Ukraine had a significant impact on the numbers.

The Blues were not allowed to sell tickets, while operating expenses were also cut due to government restrictions until the sale was completed by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital in late May.

Chelsea said they expect some of the restrictions to have an impact “in the coming years due to the long-term impact of restrictions on entering into new contractual arrangements”.

During the financial period, the west London side invested £118m in the squad and made an overall profit of £123.2m from player trading, including Tammy Abraham, Marc Guehi, Fikayo Tomori and Kurt Zouma.

The figures do not take into account recent spending from the new owners, who spent around three times the 2021-22 squad investment in the January transfer window alone.
