Huddersfield boss Carlos Corberan is convinced his players have “the right mentality” to seal promotion to the Premier League after their play-off semi-final win over Luton.
A lone late goal from Jordan Rhodes gave the Terriers a 1-0 win in the second leg at John Smith’s Stadium and a 2-1 aggregate win.
Huddersfield, who were relegated from the top flight in 2019, will now play either Nottingham Forest or Sheffield United in the final at Wembley on 29 May.
Corberan, in his second season in charge, said: “We knew it was going to be important to have the right mentality and character if we were to reach Wembley.
“First of all, I have to congratulate the players and I’m looking forward to the final.
“Nothing makes me prouder than seeing how happy they are and how much they identify with the team.
“We’re going to rest for the next few days and then start working towards that game and see who we’re going to play against.”
Luton was unlucky when Rhodes converted substitute Sorba Thomas’ free-kick at the far post in the 82nd minute when he scored a late goal.
The Hatters were long overshadowed in the second leg, as they did in Friday’s first leg at Kenilworth Road, which ended 1-1.
Corberan added: “It wasn’t an easy game and we had to work really, really hard.
“I don’t think there was really a time when we were better than Luton, but we had the special moment with a set piece.”
Luton manager Nathan Jones called some Huddersfield fans “an absolute disgrace” after they ran onto the pitch after the final whistle.
Some Terrier supporters ran to the far end to mock Luton’s fans, while Jones said he had been abused by others.
He said: “The fans have been an absolute disgrace. As one of us wasn’t… the stewards, I don’t know why they showed up.
“We’re not going to complain because football fans are like that, some are jerks. They didn’t portray Huddersfield Town as a good club.
“You won the game, go and celebrate with your players, go and celebrate something wonderful. Instead, they made rather obscene gestures.
“I saw small children, I saw a mother with a small child. If that were my wife, I would be disgusted.
“They came up to me, abused me and did things to me. Some were OK, others congratulated us, but after that they didn’t put Huddersfield Town in a good light.”
Jones, who led Luton to League One promotion in 2018 and returned for a second term in 2020 after an unsuccessful stint at Stoke, vowed his side will return stronger.
“Absolutely, we want to finish higher (next season), we want to push boundaries. We want to do that now after raising expectations,” Jones said.
“It may not be possible, but we will recruit. On June 23, I’m sure our squad will be better and we’ll go again.
“What has caught up with us this season is the fact that we have had so many injuries. I haven’t been able to choose my best starting XI with game changers in two months.
“Congratulations to Huddersfield, they’ve been great all season but let’s talk about us, we’ve been outstanding, I’m so proud of them.”
