Pirates’ Siphelele Ndlovu vies for the ball with Al Ahly Tripoli’s Mohamed Abdussalam in their Confederation Cup semi-final second leg match
Morocco’s Renaissance Berkane meets South Africa’s Orlando Pirates in Friday’s Caf Confederation Cup final after they reached Sunday’s semi-finals.
Youssef Elfahli scored twice for Berkane as they beat Congo DR TP Mazembe 4-1 at home to take a 4-2 lead on aggregate.
In their other last four meetings, Pirates Al Ahly defeated Libya’s Tripoli 2-1 on aggregate, despite losing 1-0 in Johannesburg on Sunday.
Mazembe, who won the competition in 2016 and 2017, led narrowly 1-0 against Morocco in the second leg but fell behind after 10 minutes when Bakr El Helali scored Berkane’s first goal.
It took the Congolese side just 60 seconds to regain their overall lead and score an important away goal as Phillippes Kinzumbi stunned the home crowd.
That meant Berkane had to win by two goals to progress and the Moroccan club were bolstered when Mazembe’s Tandi Mwape was sent off midway through the second half.
Larbi Naji made it 2-1 for the hosts with eleven minutes remaining and two late goals from Youssef Elfahli secured the win.
The Pirates led 2-0 away from Al Ahly after the first leg, but the return was anything but routine as they struggled on slippery surfaces in rainy Soweto.
Al Ahly scored in the 89th minute through substitute Ali Aqoub but failed to score a crucial second to level the aggregate.
Berkane won the 2020 Confederation Cup while Pirates lost in the 2015 final and never won the trophy.
The final will be held in Uyo, Nigeria on Friday.
