South Africa’s rugby world champion Elton Jantjies was arrested at a Johannesburg airport on Sunday for allegedly causing “malicious property damage” on a flight from Dubai.

Jantjies, 31, was arrested at OR Tambo International Airport and later released on bail of 1,000 rand (£51).

He is expected to appear in a magistrates’ court on Monday.

Jantjies’ agent said his client allegedly damaged a light on board the plane.

“We believe the incident has been unnecessarily aggravated,” added James Adams a statement.external link

“However, our client continues to comply with the investigation and will approach the matter with due seriousness.”

Jantjies, who has played 41 times for the Springboks and was part of the 2019 World Cup squad, had holidayed in Turkey with his family, who are still there, before flying home via Dubai.

Colonel Athlenda Mathe, spokeswoman for the South African Police Service, said: “SAPS can confirm that the 31-year-old man arrested at OR Tambo International Airport for malicious damage to property has been released on bail.”
