Analysis: Arsenal 4-1 Crystal Palace

Michael Emons, ` Sport

The managerless Crystal Palace are without a win in 2023 and have not done well at Premier League leaders Arsenal.

From the moment Gabriel Martinelli scored the first goal, there was only one winner as the Eagles suffered their fourth straight loss.

Patrick Vieira was sacked as manager on Friday, and Gunners fans mocked their fellow Eagles by chanting their former captain’s name throughout the game.

Whether the decision to sack Vieira turns out to be a tour de force or a scare tactic gone awry remains to be seen.

The team was led by U21 boss Paddy McCarthy and he spoke of positive results but Arsenal drove to victory.

For the first time in five games, Palace managed to score through Jeffrey Schlupp, but it came as Arsenal led 3-0 and the hosts restored their three-goal lead shortly after.

Palace are now just three points above the relegation zone but it’s a crucial period as they need to ensure they get the right coach ahead of a crucial April.

Still, Palace fans will be comforted that their future is still in their own hands. In April they meet six of their relegation rivals – Leicester, Leeds, Southampton, Everton, Wolves and West Ham – and how they perform in those games will go a long way in deciding their future.
