A Closer Look at Medford Graduate Multi-Athlete Charlie Kleist: Pancakes or Waffles?

We take a closer look at multi-athlete and Medford graduate Charlie Kleist for a glimpse into how Kleist works with our world-famous “Pancakes or Waffles?” interview.

In focus: Which subjects/courses were your favorite subjects and why?

glue: I’ve always enjoyed math and physics. I like that mathematics surrounds us everywhere and can be applied in everyday life. I love to compete in any sport so Phy-ed is a no-brainer.

In focus: What words of wisdom can you share with other student athletes?

glue: The part of the sport that you hate the most or that makes you quit the sport. Is the same thing that makes winning so much more enjoyable? Because you know what it took to get to this point.

In focus: What are your hobbies?

glue: My favorite hobby is golf. Otherwise, I like to do sports and spend time with my friends.

In focus: Who is/was your first favorite teacher and why?

glue: My favorite teacher was probably my psychology teacher and soccer coach, Ross Hackbarth. His classes were very interesting and never boring. Also, he was just a really cool guy to talk to about sports.

In focus: What’s the most unusual food you’ve ever eaten?

glue: Rocky Mountain oysters (aka testicles)

In focus: What music do you like to listen to the most?

glue: I’m a pretty big rap guy, especially 21 Savage

In focus: What are your plans after high school?

glue: I will study engineering at UW-Stout and also play football there.

In focus: If they made a film about you and your life, what would it be called?

glue: I don’t think my life is entertaining enough to make a film about it. But I love the movie Wolf of Wall Street so let’s get on with it.

In focus: What sports did you play during your high school career?

glue: I played football and basketball every four years. I wanted to play tennis in my freshman year until the disease came. Then the following year I wanted to play until I had wrist surgery. So I finally gave up tennis and decided to play golf during my junior year. Long story short, I was horrible and decided to run track and field my senior year.

In focus: Which teammate wouldn’t you love to be stranded on a desert island with?

glue: I would say Logan Baumgartner. I don’t think man is very exposed to the wild. If I needed someone to win in Fortnite, he would be the first person I would call. If I were stranded on an island, I’d need a man like Ty Metz by my side. This guy knows how to get things done.

In focus: What unforgettable moments did you have as an athlete?

glue: Becoming the regional champion in basketball twice in a row is definitely a challenge. Also, getting my first touchdown was pretty cool. It might not have lasted until my senior year, but winning my first football playoff game was great. Participating in a section finals in basketball was something I will never forget. Finally, beating our middle school rival (Northland Pines) and winning the conference was unforgettable.

In focus: Who are your favorite athletes and/or teams?

glue: My favorite football team is the Cowboys and my favorite player is Ezekiel Elliot. And for some reason, I’ve always loved Steph Curry.

In focus: What do you enjoy most about competing in front of family, friends and fans?

glue: The fans cheering you on or harassing you just make you want to play harder and give 100%.

In focus: Is there one or more funny or unusual moments that you have experienced in sports?

glue: Nothing too fun or unusual 🙂

In focus: What’s the best thing about being a student athlete?

glue: You have the opportunity to hang out with your friends for a few extra hours a day.

In focus: What words of wisdom can you share with other student athletes?

glue: The part of the sport that you hate the most or that makes you quit the sport. Is the same thing that makes winning so much more enjoyable? Because you know what it took to get to this point.

In focus: Finally pancakes or waffles?

glue: Simple waffles. You can fill every little indentation with a lot more syrup.
