Rangers secured a late win over Dundee on Sunday to keep the Premiership title race going into the weekend.
Celtic were six points clear on Saturday night thanks to a 4-0 win over Ross County, while Hearts, Aberdeen, Dundee United and St Johnstone all recorded victories.
Here are five things we learned from the weekend’s action.
A rare away win could be crucial
Dundee United took their first three points away from home in five months at the perfect moment. With none of the six sides in mid-table separated by a point going into the weekend without a win, Marc McNulty scored in the sixth minute of added time in a 2-1 win over St Mirren. The win moved United to fourth place ahead of games against Hibernian and Dundee.
Callum Hendry can save the Saints’ season
The forward has taken his tally to six in 10 games since returning from loan at Kilmarnock when he scored a double to seal a comeback win over Motherwell. The 24-year-old failed to score a league goal for St Johnstone last season but has capitalized on his chance after loan spells at Aberdeen and Killie. Hendry showed good movement before heading home the equalizer and his eventual winner was a beauty as he blasted home without breaking the stride to move Saints four points from bottom.
Aberdeen back in top 6 chase
The Dons came from behind to beat Hibernian 3-1 and seal their first win under Jim Goodwin. They remain in 10th place but victories over Dundee and Ross County could be enough to put them in the top half ahead of the split. “Like I said to the players before this game, we can’t affect what happened before, but we can have a real impact on how the season goes,” Goodwin said. Hibs still have work to do to secure their place in the top six after being sacked for the eighth time in the league season and Ryan Porteous, who was also retroactively suspended earlier in the season, for a second.
Ange Postecoglou is also taking a day off
The Celtic manager has detailed his love of the game since arriving in Scotland, but it’s not about his family watching Rangers on TV. Asked if he would tune in to title rivals’ trip to Dundee following his team’s 4-0 win over Ross County, Postecoglou said: “My Sundays are dominated by my wife and kids mate. With Sing 2 on, I have to fight for the remote.” He added, “If we get three points today, why bother watching anything else?”
Rangers are delayed but not derailed
The champions saw their game halted four times at Dens Park, three of them when their fans threw tennis balls and streamers to protest plans to play Celtic in November’s Sydney Super Cup. The game was also interrupted by the sprinkler system being triggered. The Light Blues fended off Christie Elliott’s early goal, however, as Aaron Ramsey’s first Rangers goal and a late winner from Connor Goldson put them back three points behind Celtic.
