MURFREESBORO, Tenn. (WSMV) – While the U.S. economy added 428,000 jobs in April, many companies are still struggling to find local employees.
City Cafe in Murfreesboro has been around since 1900 and offers a hometown experience.
“We’ve had customers coming here for 50 years,” said owner Teresa Kellogg.
But since COVID things are difficult. There are several “Now Hiring” signs posted on the property.
“We have people interviewing us or saying they’re coming and not showing up,” said Cortney Adams, a waitress at City Cafe.
According to Adams, there are only two waitresses left. They also need help in the kitchen.
“It’s hard to give each table the attention it deserves when we’re full and there’s only two of us. We can only do as much as we can because there aren’t many of us,” Adams explained.
Kellogg says with inflation, many hope for higher wages, but as a small business they can’t afford it.
“People are asking for more because everything has gone up. “Kellogg said the small businesses just aren’t at that level of these corporate sites and these factories,” Kellogg said.
With high hopes that the right people will come along, the owners plan to continue to fill in where they fall short.
“We almost lost that place during COVID, and I won’t go down that path again,” Kellogg said.
