MADISON — While a number of wedge issues are making noise, it’s the economy — and rising prices — that voters are most concerned about, according to a new poll from the Convention of States Action.
The poll of more than 1,000 likely voters, conducted by renowned pollster The Trafalgar Group, found:
- 5 percent of American voters say bringing inflation down and cleaning up the economy is the most important issue for them in the upcoming 2022 election.
- 9 percent state that they are tackling climate change
- 3 percent say they ensure racial and social justice
- 11 percent say to secure the border
- 7 percent say US natural gas and oil production will be expanded
- 5 percent say to end the war between Russia and Ukraine
- 3 percent say they fund the police and reduce crime
- 6 say they address China’s aggression against US interests
“The deteriorating economy and rising prices are by far the most important issues American voters are focusing on this year, yet the Biden administration continues to show how much it has lost touch with ordinary Americans on fundamental economic issues.” said Mark Meckler. President of the Convention of States Action.
A Fox News National poll this week returned similar results, with worries about the country’s future and inflation topping the list of voters’ concerns. That spells bad news for Democratic control in the upcoming halftime. Republicans would be supported by 46 percent of respondents, while 39 percent would prefer Democrats if the election were today.
That 7-point lead is up from 2 points last month and is the widest Republicans have had this year. Fox News models suggest this would be a 44-seat swing in the House of Representatives and an 11-seat swing in the Senate.
Stocks posted their worst day since 2020 when the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 1,000 points on Thursday, a day after the Fed hiked interest rates to try to ease runaway inflation.
According to the Fox News poll, just 21 percent are positive about conditions, up from 33 percent in December 2020. 77 percent are negative about the economy — including majorities of Republicans (88%), independents (82%) and Democrats (63). %).
A poll this week by ABC News and Washington Post found that 57 percent of Americans disapprove of President Biden’s handling of the economy.
Yet his government continues to push troubling policies that are churning markets and shaking consumer confidence.
“When alarming news broke of a sharper-than-expected contraction in our country’s GDP, President Biden has been busy touting student loan decrees, and now they’re using the Supreme Court leak to shift the narrative to social issues,” said Mecklenburg. “But Americans want sound leadership and priority to fix our economy, and so far Biden and his Democrats have provided none of that, instead focusing on a variety of issues that won’t help the average American.”
