WIESBADEN, GERMANY — Disposal of furniture and household items during the ever-changing station season is not limited to the facilities found at a U.S. Army facility. In the German economy there are many ways to dispose of, sell or give away goods.
Disposing of old furniture and housewares that won’t survive another PCS move can seem overwhelming. Often this same predicament occurs for both the incoming and outgoing community members.
In the municipalities outside the plant gates, Germany offers a large number of facilities to support the disposal of objects. Recycling yards, so-called recycling yards, are facilities where people can dispose of household rubbish, bulky waste and objects that are not picked up by the municipal waste disposal service.
There are three recycling centers in Wiesbaden: Nordenstadt, Dotzheim and Bierstadt. Typical opening times are: Tuesday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Normally, most recycling centers are closed on Mondays. Private households can transport objects with a volume of up to 700 liters – about as much as fits in a normal-sized car trunk. The on-site employees help to sort the items and find the right containers. To prove that you live nearby and are therefore authorized to use the recycling depots, the on-site employees simply ensure that your license plate number matches the city of the desired recycling depot. Anyone who uses the Wiesbaden recycling centers, for example, should have a license plate number that begins with the letters “WI”.
Another interesting service for residents of remote apartments who have to dispose of larger household items is the bulky waste service. Every Wiesbaden private household can arrange four free individual appointments to collect bulky waste per year by telephone or online via the ELW Service Center. The bulky waste pick-up can take loads of up to five cubic meters. Appointments in Wiesbaden can be made by telephone on +49 611 7153-0 or by registering online at https://www.elw.de/login. In addition, community members who have items that are like-new can turn them in to the USAG Wiesbaden Re-Use Center. The re-use portion of the recycling center at Clay Kaserne accepts reusable items and makes them available to community members free of charge. This is separate from recycling and run by an authorized volunteer organization. The Re-Use Center is open on Mondays and Thursdays from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. and on the first Saturday of the month from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. For more information on working hours and volunteering opportunities, visit the Wiesbaden Re-Use Center group’s Facebook page.
