NAACP President: Racial Wealth Gap ‘Greatest Obstacle to Realizing Dr. King’s Dream”

NAACP President and CEO Derrick Johnson said the racial wealth divide was the “greatest obstacle” to realizing the late Martin Luther King Jr.’s civil rights dream.

“From suffrage to police reform to the ongoing fight for economic justice, there is still much work to be done to bring Dr. To fully realize King’s dream. Today, the racial disparity in wealth in America continues to be the greatest obstacle to the realization of Dr. King’s dream,” Derrick Johnson said in a statement Sunday before the federal holiday honoring the slain civil rights leader.

“We have the tools to address the racial disparity in wealth through sweeping student debt relief, and now millions of Americans are counting on our elected leaders to have the courage to act,” Johnson said.

Research shows that the racial wealth gap between white and black Americans has widened in recent years: the net worth of the average white household in the US was about 10 times that of the average black household before the COVID-19 pandemic.

Though the US has made strides on racial equality in many areas, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said the country and government have much more to do to address racial injustice in the economy.

“As we look into the new year, the NAACP will continue to advance the fight for student debt relief, champion efforts to dismantle white supremacy, and ensure justice for all,” Johnson said.

Speaking Sunday at the church in Atlanta, Georgia, where King was preaching to pay tribute to the late civil rights leader, President Biden stressed that the country is at a “tipping point” in its fight for democracy and its fight against racism, inequality and… other evil is located .

“The struggle for the soul of this nation is eternal. It’s a constant struggle. It is a constant struggle between hope and fear, kindness and cruelty, justice and injustice. Against those who trade in racism, extremism and insurgency,” Biden said.
