In recent months, several F1 teams have benefited from this wave of investment.

Most notably, French designer Alpine recently announced that a number of the world’s biggest sports stars had become new strategic investors.

Who owns the Alpine F1 racing team?

With a long and illustrious history in the sport dating back to 1981, Alpine’s parent company Renault has become one of the most invested teams in Formula 1 over the past year.

Renault raced under various names during its F1 tenure and remains owner of the racing team, which was renamed in 2021 to promote the company’s sports car brand, Alpine.

There is definitely little known about who owns the Alpine F1 racing team as a whole, but what is known is that back in June 2023, 24% of the team’s shares were sold to an investment group that included Otro Capital, RedBird Capital Partners and Maximum Effort Investments .

RedBird’s portfolio includes a large stake in Fenway Sports Group, a group that currently includes the Boston Red Sox and Liverpool FC, and also holds stakes in both AC Milan and Toulouse. Meanwhile, Maximum Effort Investments is led by actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.

How much money have celebrities invested in Alpine?

It’s difficult to know exactly how much money each of the above-mentioned sports stars invested in Alpine in the most recent investment round.

Back in June, Otro Capital – the company the stars are now working with – announced a €200m (£173m) strategic investment in Alpine Racing Ltd. at. Since then, they announced last week that the aforementioned stars had joined the group.

With the original investment of 200 million euros, Otro Capital acquired 24% of the Formula 1 team. Reynolds, McElhenney and Jordan were involved in this investment through their company Maximum Effort Investments and regret controlling a tenth of this 24% stake.

How good is the Alpine F1 racing team? Performances from last season

After a pretty torrid 2023 season, this latest round of investment from some well-known names is good news for French team Alpine.

With five races remaining in the current season – the next race will take place at the United States Grand Prix in Austin, Texas in 2023 – they are sixth out of ten teams in the constructors’ championship.

Both drivers, Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly, have each secured a podium finish over the course of the season, highlighting the French team’s potential, but overall results and consistency have been poor and will likely see them finish with 4th place below the result of last season.

Due to its connection to Renault, the team has a long and illustrious history in Formula 1, dating back to 1981. They always competed under different names and celebrated their first success under Benetton when they won the constructors’ championship in 1995. As their driver, Michael Schumacher won two drivers’ championships in 1994 and 1995.

More titles followed in the mid-2000s, this time under Renault, as the team won the constructors’ championship in 2005 and 2006 and Fernando Alonso won the drivers’ titles in the same seasons.

Alonso returned in 2021 when Alpine was announced as the future new name of the Renault team to promote the brand. It is not fully known how long Alpine will be used as the team’s name, but it is said to be a “long-term contract.”
