Matthew McConaughey has dated some big celebrities during his time in the industry. And while he hasn’t ruled out dating someone outside of Hollywood, he was at one point hesitant about doing so. If only because of the information imbalance between celebrities and non-celebrities.

Before his marriage, McConaughey knew what it was like to date both celebrities and non-celebrities alike. But in his experience, it was easier to date those who were already famous.
This was because celebrities tended to be on par when it came to learning from each other. But when you dated people who weren’t famous, there was an information imbalance that could make things uncomfortable.
“Most of the women I meet are actresses. When I date someone who is just as famous, I already know something about them and have a sense of who they are because I’ve read about them in newspapers and magazines,” McConaughey once told Contact Music.
McConaughey didn’t have the same luxury when dealing with non-celebrities.
“It can be weird when I date a woman who isn’t famous because I don’t know anything about her beforehand, but they know things about me. That means we’re on unequal footing,” he said. “When you meet a stranger, the conversation usually starts with something like, ‘So what are you doing?’ Everyone already knows what I do and how old I am. You know my likes and dislikes. That’s why I find it easier to date famous women.”
